Hampden-Sydney Falls At Home To No. 23 Rowan (NJ) 8-2

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Senior shortstop Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) collected three hits, senior first baseman and team captain Grayson Harris (Moseley) had two hits and junior center fielder and team captain Jack Wilson (Petersburg) scored two runs, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped an 8-2 non-conference baseball decision at home to nationally-ranked No. 23 Rowan (NJ) University on Sunday afternoon on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Senior right-hander Gavin Gregory (Suffolk) started and took the mound setback for the host Tigers (3-6) against the visiting Profs (2-1).
 
H-SC scored two runs on eight hits with two errors … scoring one run each in the first and seventh innings. RU scored eight runs on 14 hits with one error … scoring three runs in the second inning, two runs in the fourth, one run in the fifth and two runs in the eighth.
 
In the first, Wilson (1-2) drew a walk as the lead-off batter, advanced to second on an infield single to shortstop by Harris (2-5), and moved to third when junior third baseman Matthew Arnold (Danville) (1-3, RBI) reached on a fielder's choice. Wilson scored with one out when senior right fielder and team captain Christian Lancaster (Danville) (1-5) reached on a fielding error at second base for an early 1-0 advantage.
 
In the seventh, Wilson led off with a double down the left field line into the corner and crossed the plate on a one-out RBI double to left center field by Arnold for a 6-2 deficit toward the final margin.
 
Masterson (3-4) contributed singles in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings, while Harris added a double in the ninth inning.
 
Gregory (1-1) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 1.2 innings for the loss, yielding four hits and three runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and no walks. Junior right-hander Jacob Williams (Chesapeake) followed with 1.2 innings, as well, allowing four hits and two runs, both earned, with no strikeouts and one walk. Freshman left-hander Bobby Holihan (Yorktown) also pitched 1.2 innings, scattering two hits and one run, earned, with a career-high three strikeouts and no walks. Senior right-hander Justin Reynolds (Virginia Beach) tossed 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing two hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Sophomore right-hander Jase Howell (Portsmouth) pitched the final 2.0 innings, yielding two hits and two runs, both earned, with no strikeouts and no walks.
 
H-SC remains at home to welcome Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opponent Ferrum College on Tuesday, March 4, at 4 p.m. for its first conference game of the season at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium.
