Hampden-Sydney Win 10-9 Over St. Mary's (MD) On Conley's Last Second Goal

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Freshman Broder Conley (Duluth, GA) scored two goals in 37 seconds, including the game winner with two seconds to go as Hampden-Sydney College defeated St. Mary's College of Maryland 10-9, Saturday afternoon at Lewis C. Everett Stadium.

The Tigers wasted no time getting the game started, as off the opening face-off junior Connor Erlenbach (Midlothian) picked up his face-off win and took it all the way before bouncing a shot into the roof of the net. One minute and 10 seconds later, the Tigers doubled their advantage as sophomore Kavin Wood (Cary, NC) took the ball on a restart, got to the middle of the field and beat the goalie low. Less than a minute later it was 3-0 to H-SC, as senior Campion White (Apex, NC) came off a screen and drew two defenders which left sophomore Alex Wagner (Cary, NC) open for the catch and finish. After the three goal run by the Tigers, the Seahawks responded, scoring four straight to close the quarter and take a 4-3 lead into the second.

After all the goals in the first quarter, the second quarter saw goals much harder to come by, as with 13:08 left in the quarter, White scored the only goal before halftime, beating two defenders down the middle of the field before beating the goalie to knot the game up at 4-4.

H-SC opened the scoring after the halftime break, as junior Davis Mack (Henrico) switched the field finding Conley alone for the sidearm shot past the keeper. The Seahawks responded with a goal less than a minute later, before Mack went from assisting to scoring, spinning past a defender to bury the shot. The Seahawks responded once more, tying the game up at six going into the final 15 minutes.

The Seahawks broke the deadlock just over a minute and a half into the final quarter and added a second less than a minute after that to take a two goal lead. H-SC got one back just under two minutes later as Wood found senior Griff Ray (Salem) with nobody around him for him to wind-up and rifle a shot into the roof of the net. With 7:50 remaining, the Seahawks reclaimed their two-goal lead on the man-advantage, which did not see the Tigers claw one back until 2:38 remaining as Mack picked up the rebound on a saved shot and put it home. The Tigers equalized with 40 seconds remaining, as Wood found Conley open in the middle of the attacking zone who flung the shot in as he was turning to face the goal. With the game even, junior Evan Yntema (Summerfield, NC) claimed an important face-off win to give H-SC possession and a chance to take the lead. With time running down, Wagner was forced to start trying to make something happen, and as he spun trying to get past a defender, he was able to locate Conley open on the right wing for the catch and sidearm finish with two seconds remaining, sealing a 10-9 victory for H-SC.

Conley led the Tigers with three goals and Mack scored two goals while adding an assist. Wood scored a goal and added two assists, and Wagner and White each scored one goal with an assist. Ray and Erlenbach scored a goal for the Tigers.

Junior Tyler Steele (Pinehurst, NC) led the Tigers with two caused turnovers while grabbing three ground balls. Senior Gaines Weis (Richmond), junior Cameron Young (Chantilly), sophomore Cameron Van Lunen (Southern Shores, NC), and freshman Lee Acra (Norfolk) each caused a turnover. Erlenbach went 6-12 on face-offs and Yntema went 6-10.

Junior Will Palmer (Atlanta, GA) got the win in net for the Tigers, making nine saves while allowing nine goals over a full 60 minutes.

The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, March 8, when they travel to take on the University of Mary Washington. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the Turf Stadium in Fredricksburg.
