Jack Wilson (Petersburg) had three hits and two RBIs in the first game, as Hampden-Sydney College split a non-conference baseball doubleheader at home with nationally-ranked No. 23 Rowan (NJ) University on Saturday on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Alex Fitz-Hugh (Chesterfield) earned the pitching win in long relief in the 12-7 nightcap, while junior right-hander
Sterling Austin (Petersburg) took the mound setback in the 8-3 opener for the host Tigers (3-5) against the visiting Profs (1-1). The game two victory was also the first home win for first-year head coach
Michael Mulvey, and it was the Garnet & Grey's second triumph past a preseason Top 25 team this week, including a 17-5 road win at No. 20 North Carolina Wesleyan University on February 26.
In game two, H-SC scored 12 runs on 11 hits with two errors … scoring one run each in the second, third and sixth innings, seven runs in the decisive seventh and two runs in the eighth. RU scored seven runs on 10 hits with two errors … scoring one run in the second inning, three runs in the fourth, one run in the seventh and two runs in the ninth.
In the second, senior right fielder and team captain
Christian Lancaster (Danville) (1-3) tripled to center field with one out and scored on a sacrifice fly RBI to left field by Chambers (2-4, 4 RBIs), tying the game at 1-1.
In the third, Wilson reached base on a fielding error in right field with one out and advanced to third on the play, and scored when Harris (2-5, 2 RBIs) followed with an RBI single to center field for an early 2-1 advantage.
In the sixth, junior third baseman
Matthew Arnold (Danville) (1-3) walked to open the at-bat, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lancaster and crossed the plate on a run-scoring double to right center field by Chambers, though the Profs led 4-3.
In the seven-run seventh, junior catcher
Hunter Powell (Ridgeway) (1-3) singled to right center field to begin things, advancing to second when Wilson was hit by a pitch. Powell scored when sophomore second baseman
Jase Howell (Portsmouth) (1-5, RBI) had a one-out RBI single right field, and after Powell advanced to second on a wild pitch, Arnold was walked intentionally to load the bases with one out. Following the second out, Chambers provided a clutch two-run single to left field that plated Wilson and Howell, and Masterson (2-5, 2 RBIs) followed with a towering two-run triple off the top of the fence in left field, scoring Arnold and Chambers. Masterson crossed the plate on another wild pitch, before junior second baseball
Turner Fitzpatrick (Mechanicsville) (1-4) drew a walk, and he would later score on an RBI infield single to shortstop by Harris … and the Tigers led 10-5.
In the eighth, Arnold doubled to right field while leading off and scored when Lancaster reached base on a throwing error by the pitcher while bunting, advancing to third on the play. Lancaster would later cross the plate on yet another wild pitch for 12-5 lead toward the final margin of victory.
Freshman left-hander
Noah Lewis (Crewe) started the nightcap and pitched the first 3.2 innings, allowing five hits and four runs, all earned, with a career-high five strikeouts and three walks. Fitz-Hugh (1-0) tossed the final 5.1 innings for the win in relief, scattering five hits and three runs, one earned, with a career-high seven strikeouts and one walk—the two Tigers combining for 12 strikeouts.

In the fourth, Harris (2-4) led off with a double down the left field line, advanced to third on a ground ball out off the bat of Howell and scored on a sacrifice fly RBI to center field by Arnold (1-2, RBI) for an early 4-1 deficit.
In the ninth, Arnold drew a two-out walk and Chambers was then hit by a pitch, and both scored when Wilson (3-4, 2 RBIs) followed with a two-run double to left center field to provide for the final margin.
Austin (1-2) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 3.1 innings for the loss, yielding five hits and four runs, three earned, with three strikeouts and no walks. Sophomore left-hander
Adam Emhoff (Chesapeake) followed with two-thirds of an inning, allowing three hits and three runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore right-hander
Logan Benton (North Chesterfield) pitched 4.0 innings, scattering three hits and one run, earned, with a career-high three strikeouts and one walk. Senior right-hander
Justin Reynolds (Virginia Beach) tossed the final scoreless and hitless inning with one strikeout and no walks.
H-SC and No. 23 Rowan will complete the three-game weekend series on Sunday, March 2, at 12 p.m. at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium.
