NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Junior Patrick Hanes (Raleigh, NC) had four assists, while freshman Cole Palmer (Atlanta, GA) scored three goals, but Hampden-Sydney College fell to Christopher Newport University, 24-8 on Saturday night at Jennings Family Stadium.

After Christopher Newport opened the game with two goals, the Tigers got one back on the man-up advantage, as Hanes found freshman Cole Palmer on the left side of the crease for his first career goal. That was the only goal the Tigers scored in the first 15 minutes, as the Captains scored six unanswered to close the quarter and take an 8-1 lead into the second.

The Tigers snapped the run in the second quarter by opening the scoring with junior Davis Mack (Richmond) finishing off the feed from senior Conor Kilfeather (Wyndmoor, PA) just 35 seconds in. The Captains responded with two more goals before Cole Palmer got his second of the day, receiving the pass from Hanes on the left side of the crease and bouncing it past the goalie for their second connection on the man-up advantage. H-SC made it two straight on the man-up advantage, as Hanes played a short pass to senior Campion White (Apex, NC) between two defenders for the turn and fire goal. After a goal from Christopher Newport, sophomore Kavin Wood (Cary, NC) scored his first goal in the Garnet and Grey, finishing the pass from Kilfeather to cut the lead back down to six. Christopher Newport scored two unanswered to close the quarter as H-SC trailed 13-5 going into halftime.

After Christopher Newport opened the second half with five unanswered goals, the Tigers answered with 1:16 remaining in the quarter, as Kilfeather made a short pass to his left to Cole Palmer who rifled a shot past the goalie to cut the score to 18-6 going into the final quarter.

CNU opened the fourth quarter with two goals before the Tigers got on the board. Wood passed the ball across the crease and found freshman Broder Conley (Duluth, GA) for his first career goal. Senior Griff Ray (Salem) made it two straight for H-SC, as Hanes found him on the right side with a pass for the goal. That was the final goal the Tigers scored on the night, but the Captains closed the game with four more goals, as H-SC fell 24-8.

Cole Palmer scored three goals to lead all Tigers on his college debut, with White, Mack, and Wood adding a goal each. Hanes led the Tigers with four assists, and Kilfeather had three assists, while Wood added an assist to his goal. Sophomore Cameron Van Lunen (Southern Shores, NC) led the Tigers with four caused turnovers.

Junior Will Palmer (Atlanta, GA) got the start in net, making eight saves, while allowing 13 goals over 30 minutes. Senior Conner McMullen (Puyullap, WA) played just over 24 minutes, making six saves and allowing eight goals. Senior Owen Hegadorn (Falls Church) played the final 5:14, making three saves while allowing three goals.

The Tigers will be back in action when they play their home opener against Pfeiffer (NC) University on Saturday, February 15. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Lewis C. Everett Stadium.
