Adam Brazil Named ODAC Kurt Axe Player Of The Year & ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete Of The Year | Shane Fernald Also Earns All-ODAC First Team Honors

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College All-American fifth-year guard and third-year team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) has been named the 2024-25 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Men's Basketball Kurt Axe Player of the Year, and the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as announced today by the conference office. Adam is just the third Tiger ever to earn conference player of the year honors, along with Russell Turner (1992) and T.J. Grimes (2000), and only the fourth scholar-athlete of the year from the College, along with Matt Green (2007) and Drew Prehmus (2008)—Brazil won the award last year, as well.

Brazil, along with junior forward and team captain Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC), were each named First Team All-ODAC, while Adam is now a three-time All-ODAC honoree after also earning First Team last season (2023-24) and Second Team in 2022-23. Fernald is a first time All-ODAC selection.

Adam Brazil has started all 26 games this season, averaging 18.2 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 33.2 minutes … shooting 45% (165-365) from the field, 28% (42-153) on three-point field goals and 86% (101-118) at the free throw line. He adds 41 steals and one block, and is the team leader in points (473), scoring average, field goals, field goal attempts, three-point attempts, free throws, free throw attempts, free throw percentage, assists (85), steals and minutes (864). Brazil has scored a career-high 34 points this season, equaled his career-high with eight rebounds (two times), had season-highs of eight assists and four steals (two times), equaled his career-high with one block, had a career-high seven (7-11) three-pointers and has played a career-high 39 minutes (two times). Adam has posted a team-best 22 double-figure scoring games, including three 30-point games among 11 20-point games, and has led the team in scoring 15 times and assists 14 times. He leads the ODAC in minutes, is third in scoring, tied for third in steals, fourth in free throw percentage and eighth in assists, and is 20th nationally in assist/turnover ratio (2.58). Adam is ninth in program history with 1,531 career points in 119 career games, adding 374 career assists (seventh all-time), 147 career steals (11th all-time) and 232 career three-pointers (Top 10 all-time).

Academically, Adam is an English major at the College with a 3.83 grade point average, a Dean's List student and member of Sigma Tau Delta English Honors Society (Alpha Omicron Chapter), Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honors Society and the Wilson Leadership Fellows Program, and has accepted an offer to be inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Society. He is one of two Hampden-Sydney students on the College's Honor Courts' Appeals Committee, received The Deis-Frye Award for Creative Nonfiction, is a member of the CSC Academic All-America® Men's Basketball Team (2024) and a two-time member of the CSC Academic All-District® Men's Basketball Team (2022-23, 2023-24), while a four-time member of the ODAC All-Academic Team (2021-24).

Brazil has previously been named to the Trevor Hudgins Award Top 25 Watch List and the Bevo Francis Award Top 50 Watch List, the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Division III National Player of the Week one time, to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week two times, the ODAC Offensive Player of the Week four times, and was also named to the All-Tournament Team for both the Hampden-Sydney Tip-Off Tournament (11/22-23) and the Charlie Cobb Classic (12/20-21). Adam was named a D3hoops.com Preseason All-America Second Team selection this year, after being named NABC All-America Third Team last season.

Shane Fernald has started 22 of 25 games, averaging 13.6 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 23.1 minutes … shooting 57% (131-231) from the field, 26% (5-19) on three-pointers and 68% (72-106) at the line. He adds 29 steals and 10 blocks, and is the team leader in field goal percentage, rebounds (187), rebound average, offensive rebounds (69) and defensive rebounds (118). Fernald has career-highs this season of 23 points, 12 rebounds, eight assists and four steals (two times), a season-high one block (10 times), and career-highs of two three-pointers and 31 minutes. He has posted 19 double-figure scoring games, including five 20-point games, and has led the team in scoring five times, in rebounding 17 times with two double-doubles and in assists six times. Shane is third in the ODAC in field goal percentage, fifth in rebounding and 10th in scoring and assists. Fernald was named the ODAC Offensive Player of the Week one time.
