Hampden-Sydney Falls At Home To Mary Washington 3-1

BOX SCORE

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Sophomore left fielder Jake Moore (Dry Fork) had one hit and one run scored, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 3-1 non-conference baseball decision at home to the University of Mary Washington on Thursday evening on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Freshman right-hander Brady Wilson (Virginia Beach) took the pitching setback in relief for the host Tigers (2-4) against the visiting Eagles (4-2).

H-SC scored one run on four hits with one error … scoring the lone run in the ninth inning. UMW scored three runs on nine hits with three errors … scoring one run each in the third, sixth and seventh innings.

In the ninth, Moore (1-2) singled to left field with one out and advanced to third on a single to right field by junior Greer Farr (Southern Shores, NC) (1-1), who was pinch-hitting. Farr was caught stealing for two outs before senior second baseman Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) reached on a throwing error at shortstop that allowed Moore to cross the plate … avoiding the shutout and providing for the final two-run margin.

Senior first baseman and team captain Grayson Harris (Moseley) (1-3) and sophomore catcher Noah Leonard (Troutville) (1-2) also collected singles for the Garnet & Grey in the third and eighth innings, respectively.

Junior right-hander Sterling Austin (Petersburg) was the first of seven pitchers for the Tigers and tossed the first 2.0 scoreless innings, yielding one hit with two strikeouts and no walks. Wilson (0-2) followed with 1.0 inning, allowing three hits and one run, earned, with no strikeouts and no walks for the tough-luck mound loss. Freshman left-hander Noah Lewis (Crewe) also tossed 2.0 scoreless innings, yielding one hit with two strikeouts and no walks. Sophomore left-hander Adam Emhoff (Chesapeake) pitched 1.1 innings, allowing two hits and two runs, both earned, with one strikeout and one walk. Junior right-handed Jacob Williams (Chesapeake) recorded two outs, yielding no hits and no runs with no strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore right-handers Logan Benton (North Chesterfield) and Jase Howell (Portsmouth) each pitched a scoreless inning, and each allowed one hit with one strikeout and no walks.

H-SC will remain at home this weekend for a three-games series against No. 23 Rowan (NJ) University, beginning with a twilight doubleheader on Saturday, March 1, at 3 p.m., and followed by the series finale on Sunday afternoon, March 2, at 12 p.m. at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium.
