Cole Palmer (Atlanta, GA) each scored three goals with two assists to help lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 15-6 win over Berry (GA) College on Saturday morning at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
The Tigers started the game strong, as two minutes and 10 seconds into the contest, sophomore
Alex Wagner (Cary, NC) gave the Tigers the lead with an unassisted goal. H-SC doubled its tally just 31 seconds later, as senior
Davis Mack (Henrico) finished off the feed from
Cole Palmer. Following a goal by the Vikings, the Tigers answered as
Cole Palmer got his first goal of the morning off a feed from Wood. Freshman
Broder Conley (Duluth, GA) scored two straight over a stretch of a minute and a half, with the first goal coming off an assist from Mack and the second off a pass from fellow classmate
Charlie Olivier (Atlanta, GA) to make the score 5-1 going into the second quarter.
The second quarter started with a goal for Berry after just one minute and 13 seconds of action, but senior
Campion White (Apex, NC) answered just under three minutes later, taking the feed from senior
Griff Ray (Salem) and putting it past the goalie on the man advantage. The Vikings had the remainder of the scoring in the quarter, striking twice to make the score 6-4 going into halftime.
It took a while for either offense to get going in the third quarter, but when a ball found the back of the net it was all Tigers from there, starting with 6:45 left in the quarter, Wood scored a goal off an assist from freshman
Nick Winchell (Wilmington, DE). Wood made it two straight just over a minute later on an unassisted goal.
Cole Palmer got his second of the afternoon on the man advantage off an assist from Ray, and Wood sealed his hat trick with a third goal in the quarter off a pass from freshman
Riley Mullins (Glen Allen), capping off four unanswered goals and gave the Tigers a 10-4 lead after 45 minutes.
H-SC opened the fourth quarter by making it five straight goals, as
Cole Palmer got his hat trick on a pass from Wagner. Berry stopped the run by scoring a goal just over two minutes later before Mack pushed the lead back to seven with a goal off a Wagner pass. White got a second 30 seconds later to push the lead to eight. Berry answered with a goal less than a minute later, and Ray got his first of the game 20 seconds after the goal by the Vikings, finishing off the pass from Wood on the man advantage. Conley got his hat trick with 5:15 left to go, finishing off the pass from
Cole Palmer to push the lead to nine. The Tigers held strong on defense the rest of the way to secure a 15-6 win over Berry.
Wood and
Cole Palmer each had three goals and two assists, while Conley scored three goals. White scored two goals on the game with Mack scoring two goals while adding an assist. Ray and Wagner each scored a goal and added two assists. Olivier, Mullins, and Winchell each had one assist.
Senior
Conor Kilfeather (Wyndmoor, PA) led the defense causing five turnovers while picking up three ground balls. Senior
Tyler Steele (Pinehurst, NC) and sophomore
Cameron Van Lunen (Southern Shores, NC) each had four caused turnovers, with Steele grabbing five ground balls to Van Lunen's four. Freshman
Kaelan Ferris (McLean) caused two turnovers, while senior
Gaines Weis (Richmond), along with freshmen
Lee Acra (Norfolk) and
McGuire Boyd (Richmond) caused one turnover. Junior
Evan Yntema (Summerfield, NC) went 5-9 on face-offs and fellow classmate
Connor Erlenbach (Midlothian) went 5-13.
Junior
Will Palmer (Atlanta, GA) got the win in net, making six saves over 52:08 minutes while allowing five goals. Senior
Conner McMullen (Puyallup, WA) played 3:40 minutes giving up one goal, and senior
Owen Hegadorn (Falls Church) played the final 4:12.
The Tigers will remain at home for their next game on Saturday, March 1, when they host St. Mary's College of Maryland in non-conference action. The game is set to begin at 12 p.m. at Lewis C. Everett Stadium.
