The Hampden-Sydney Rugby Football Club opened its spring season on Saturday at the annual Spider 7's hosted by Richmond. The Tigers defeated Christopher Newport 20-0 in the opening round with
Jonathan Person scoring the first try of the spring.
Thomas Nichols followed with a try and then
Graeme Ebert scored twice to set the final, with no conversions made. In game two the ruggers fell to eventual tournament winner Richmond 20-0. The Tigers will next play on March 1 in the VMI 7's tournament in Lexington. Along with H-SC and host Virginia Military Institute, other participating teams include Frostburg State, James Madison, Radford, Washington and Lee, the University of Richmond, and Virginia Commonwealth. H-SC will open pool play against Radford followed by a match vs JMU and then a match vs Washington and Lee. Following morning pool play will be seeded matches where the two fourth-ranked teams from each pool will play, followed by a match up of the third-ranked teams, then the second-ranked teams. The top two teams will then play for the tournament title in the last match of the day in fifteen-minute-match style of 7's, guaranteeing each team four matches on the day.
