(8)Hampden-Sydney Wins On The Road At Eastern Mennonite 64-62

HARRISONBURG, Va. --
Sophomore guard Travis Stickney (Mount Pleasant, SC) made 2-3 free throws with just eight-tenths of a second remaining, to lead (8)Hampden-Sydney College to a 64-62 come-from-behind Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball road win at Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday afternoon in Harrisonburg. The visiting Tigers trailed 62-60 after the host Royals made 1-2 free throws with 16.9 seconds left, but Stickney tied it at 62-62 with a driving layup at :07.9, and then made his game-winning free throws after being fouled on a three-point field goal attempt that followed a timeout from a steal by sophomore guard Santana Lynch (Dallas, TX). Sophomore guard Peter Moye (Charlotte, NC) scored a career-high and game-high 21 points, while Stickney finished with a season-high 19 points and Lynch contributed a double-double with 10 points and a career-high and game-high 12 rebounds. H-SC improved to 5-2 overall, 1-1 in the ODAC, while EMU dropped to 2-6 overall, 0-2 in the ODAC—led by Aaron Brooks with 19 points and Isaiah Carr with 14 points.

"Found a way to get it done today," said seventh-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "We showed some fight in spurts throughout the game, but this team has a lot more to give. The best is yet to come with these guys."

H-SC, ranked eighth in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, scored the first points of the contest on a three-point field goal by sophomore guard Tugg Bizzelle (Baltimore, MD) at 19:30, but EMU responded with the next 11 points, including five from Carr, to lead 11-3 with 15:48 on the clock. Moye followed with the first of his five three-pointers, but the Royals extended their advantage to 20-9 at 12:14 after a three-point play by Brooks. The Tigers began battling back and were within 21-16 with 8:15 left in the half as Lynch scored four quick points and senior guard Colin Radcliffe (Richlands, NC) connected on a three-pointer. Consecutive three-pointers by Moye had the Garnet & Grey within 23-22 at 5:13, but EMU used a quick 11-4 run to lead 34-26 with 1:50 on the first-half clock. The visitors closed with the final five points of the half, including a basket inside from junior guard William Britt Richmond) and a late three-pointer by Stickney for a 34-31 deficit at the intermission.

H-SC quickly closed to within 39-38 with 15:51 remaining as Stickney scored four-straight points on a jumper followed by a steal and layup, and it was still a one-point deficit at 41-40 after a basket down low by senior forward Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) at 14:46. EMU took its largest lead of the second half at 49-43 with 12:22 left to play after three free throws by Carr, but the Tigers tied it at 49-49 at 9:56—getting points from Stickney, Lynch and Moye—and took their first lead since the start at 51-50 when Lynch scored on his second-straight offensive rebound basket with 8:07 on the second-half clock. The Royals used an 8-3 run to lead 58-54 at 3:18, but the Garnet & Grey tied it at 59-59 with 1:28 to go on another three-pointer by Moye. H-SC was within 61-60 with 43.5-seconds remaining after 1-2 free throws by Fernald ahead of the final 16.9 seconds that led to the final outcome.

Moye led H-SC with his game-high and career-high 21 points, including 5-12 three-pointers. Stickney added his season-high 19 points for the Tigers, adding seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. Lynch contributed his second double-double of the season and his career with 10 points and a career-high and game-high 12 rebounds, along with two assists. H-SC shot 48% (23-48) from the field, including 32% (9-28) on three-pointers, and 60% (9-15) at the free throw line.

Brooks led EMU with his 19 points, adding a game-high seven steals. Carr finished with his 14 points for the Royals, along with four assists and three steals. EMU shot 48% (22-46) from the field, including 40% (6-15) on three-pointers, and 57% (12-21) at the line.

H-SC will be idle for fall semester examinations next week, December 9-13, before hosting the Elder, Friedman & Allen Holiday Classic on Dec. 19-20 on the new Tony Shaver Court in Diaz Arena at the renovated Kirby Field House. The Tigers will play Wilson (PA) on Friday, Dec. 19, at 7:30 p.m., before playing (5)Redlands (CA) on Saturday, Dec. 20 at 3:30 p.m.
