Sophomore guard Peter Moye (Charlotte, NC) scored a career-high 18 points, including 4-6 three-point field goals, and sophomore guard Travis Stickney (Mount Pleasant, SC) added 13 points and a career-high seven steals, but (17)Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 77-75 season-opening and non-conference overtime decision to (7)UW-La Crosse in the TowneBank Tipoff Tournament on Friday night in Virginia Beach. The Tigers (0-1) had led 34-26 at halftime, and forced the extra five minutes when sophomore guard Tugg Bizzelle (Baltimore, MD) scored on a driving layup with 4.3-seconds left in regulation to tie it at 70-70. Sam Grieger scored a game-high 36 points for the Eagles (1-0), including the game-winning basket at the OT buzzer on an offensive rebound of a missed three-pointer. It was a battle of two Top 20 teams in the D3hoops.com Preseason Top 25.

"Not the result we wanted tonight, but we play these types of games early so we can learn about where we are as a team at this phase of the season, and I do think that we learned a lot about ourselves in this one," said seventh-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "We will watch the film, clean up the mistakes, and be ready to go tomorrow."

H-SC took an early 8-4 advantage at 16:16 after four quick points each from sophomore guard Santana Lynch (Dallas, TX) and Stickney. The Tigers led 15-9 following a steal by Stickney led to a fastbreak layup by junior center Alex Cannon (Loganville, GA) with 12:25 on the clock. H-SC maintained the advantage and led 26-19 after another basket inside by Cannon at 5:24, and it was 29-22 at 4:55 following a three-pointer by Moye. UWL was within 29-26 after a free throw by Grieger with 3:26 left in the half, but the Garnet & Grey scored the final five points to lead 34-26 at halftime, getting another three-pointer from Moye and a jumper from Stickney.

H-SC led 38-30 early in the second half at 18:12 after a defensive rebound and coast-to-coast layup by Moye. UWL responded with nine unanswered points to lead 39-38 with 16:30 remaining, and extended its run to 16-3 for a 46-41 advantage at 14:09. The Tigers answered back with a 14-5 run to lead 55-51 with 8:23 left after a layup by Bizzelle, while getting seven points from Moye and five points from senior guard Colin Radcliffe (Richlands, NC)—each making a three-pointer. The Garnet & Grey led 61-55 at 5:22 after another steal by Stickney led to a Radcliffe layup, but the Eagles tied it at 64-64 with a steal and three-pointer by Dustin Derousseau. H-SC led 68-67 after two free throws by Lynch with 41.2-seconds on the clock, but a three-point play had UWL ahead 70-68 at :23.7. The Tigers got a break when the Eagles missed two free throws with 10.8-seconds left, as Bizzelle tied it at 70-70 with his driving layup with 4.3-seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime.

UWL led 75-70 at 2:58 of OT after a three-pointer and two free throws from Grieger, but H-SC battled back with a three-pointer by Moye at 2:39 and an offensive rebound basket by Cannon at 1:49. It looked like a second extra period would ensue, but Grieger made his game-winner on the put-back of the missed three-pointer at the buzzer.

Moye led H-SC with his career-high 18 points, including 7-11 field goals with 4-6 three-pointers, adding five rebounds to tie his career-high. Stickney finished with his 13 points for the Tigers, adding career-highs and game-highs of eight rebounds and seven steals, and a game-high three assists. Lynch contributed a career-high 12 points, Radcliffe had 11 points and Cannon added a career-high eight points, five rebounds and a game-high four blocks. H-SC shot 52% (28-54) from the field, including 38% (6-16) on three-pointers, and 59% (13-22) at the free throw line.

Grieger led UWL with his game-high 36 points, including 14-26 field goals (2-5 3FGs) and 6-9 free throws. Derousseau finished with 14 points for the Eagles, adding eight rebounds and six steals, while Jacob Butler had 10 points. UWL shot 43% (29-67) from the field, including 30% (9-30) on three-pointers, and 56% (10-18) at the line.

H-SC will play (RV)Keene State (NH) in the consolation game of the TowneBank Tipoff Tournament on Saturday, November 8, at 2 p.m. in Virginia Beach.
