No. 17 Hampden-Sydney Opens 2025-26 At TowneBank Tipoff Tournament

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College will open its 2025-26 Basketball season on the road this weekend in non-conference action at the TowneBank Tipoff Tournament hosted by Virginia Wesleyan University in Virginia Beach. The Tigers, ranked No. 17 in the D3hoops.com Preseason Top 25, will play No. 7 UW-La Crosse to open the season on Friday, November 7, at 7 p.m., then will play either (RV)Keene State College or the No. 14 Marlins on Saturday, Nov. 8, at either 2 p.m. or 4 p.m. The two games will be available to watch at flocollege.com.

Head Coach Caleb Kimbrough
H-SC is led by the seventh-year head coach who took over the program on April 4, 2019. The former head coach at Huntingdon (AL) College from 2016-19, Kimbrough is the 19th head coach in the 116-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. He is no stranger to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), having played four years at Guilford (NC) College and coached six years with the Quakers, and one year at Washington and Lee University. Kimbrough is 106-44 at the College, ranking sixth in program coaching wins, while his current winning percentage (.707) ranks second all-time. He is a two-time National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division III District 6 Coach of the Year (2022-23, 2023-24), was the 2022-23 ODAC Men's Basketball Bob Johnson Coach of the Year and the 2024-25 D3hoops.com Region 6 Coach of the Year.

2025-26 Coaching Staff
Coach Kimbrough will be aided this season by second-year associate head coach Bryson Gibson, also in his seventh year with the program, fourth-year assistant coach Carson Long, along with first-year assistant coach Zach Hinton.

Scouting the No. 17 Tigers
H-SC completed 2024-25 with a final overall record of 23-6 for its third-straight season with 20-plus wins, also the 18th 20-win season in program history–the first time since 1996-99 that the Tigers have accomplished three consecutive 20-win campaigns. The Garnet & Grey also made their third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, and 17th overall since 1989, advancing to the Sweet 16 for the eighth time.

The Tigers return 15 lettermen among 20 team members, including two returning starters in senior forward Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) and sophomore guard Travis Stickney (Mount Pleasant, SC). The 6-8, 270-pound Fernald started 25 of 28 games and averaged 13.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists while earning First Team All-ODAC honors last season. He shot 57% (147-257) from the field, including 26% (5-19) on three-point field goals, and 68% (79-16) at the free throw line with career-highs of 23 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists. Stickney (6-2) started all 29 games and averaged 7.7 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists. He shot 51% (82-162) from the field, including 29% (13-45) on three-pointers, and 75% (45-60) at the line with career-highs of 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
 
Other top returners include senior guard Colin Radcliffe (Richlands, NC) and sophomore guard Tugg Bizzelle (Baltimore, MD). Radcliffe (6-5) started five of 29 games and averaged 8.8 points with 50 three-pointers. He shot 43% (86-202) from the field, including 40% (50-124) on three-pointers, and 81% (34-62) at the line with career-highs of 27 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Bizzelle (6-2) started three of 29 games and averaged 3.1 points and 1.4 assists. He shot 35% (33-95) from the field, including 38% (9-24) on three-pointers, and 44% (15-34) at the line with career-highs of 10 points, seven rebounds and nine assists. Sophomore guards Santana Lynch (Dallas, TX) (6-5) and Asa Williams (Atlanta, GA) (6-3) also return after each missed nearly all of last season due to injury, and both are expected to contribute early this season.

Also returning are senior guard Davis Cauble (Richmond), senior guard Grayson Schultz (Moseley) and senior guard/forward Kolby Wright (Cookeville, TN), junior guard William Britt (Richmond), junior center Alex Cannon (Loganville, GA) and junior guard Mike Patrick (Midlothian), along with sophomore forward John Campbell (High Point, NC), sophomore guard Peter Moye (Charlotte, NC) and sophomore guard Ben Mulry (Greensboro, NC). Freshmen newcomers include forward Sam Messinger (Charlottesville), guard/forward Mason Patrick (Midlothian), guard/forward Jameson Shipman (Smithfield), forward Jaelen Solomon (Goldsboro, NC) and guard Tyree White (Indian Trail, NC).

Scouting No. 7 UW-La Crosse
UWL finished with a record of 25-6 last season and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles are coached by third-year head coach JT Gritzmacher and return their top three scorers, including junior guard Sam Grieger (15.9 points, 5.4 rebounds), senior guard Dustin Derousseau (14.4 points, 49 3FGs) and senior forward JJ Paider (13.5 points, 7.6 rebounds). H-SC and UWL are meeting for the first-time ever in basketball.

Scouting (RV)Keene State
KSC finished with a record of 23-6 last season and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Owls are coached by second-year head coach Steven Enright, who previously coached at Bridgewater College (2019-24), and return junior forward Wesley Odiase (10.0 points), senior guard Mitch Shettles (8.6 points, 49 3FGs) and senior guard Ryan Blakey (6.7 points, 27 3FGs)—Blakey played for the Tigers during the 2022-23 season. H-SC and KSC would also be meeting for the first-time ever in basketball.

Scouting No. 14 Virginia Wesleyan
VWU finished with a record of 22-7 last season and won the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship. The Marlins are coached by 26th-year head coach Dave Macedo and return their top three scorers, including graduate guard Omari DeVeaux (14.5 points, 61 3FGs), senior forward Amari Moorer (12.3 points, 7.9 rebounds) and senior guard Khai Seargeant (12.0 points, 43 3FGs). H-SC leads the overall series against VWU at 53-40 with six-straight wins, including a 66-47 home win last February 5.

ODAC Preseason Poll
H-SC was picked fourth in the 2025-26 ODAC Preseason Poll. The Tigers earned 96 points among the 12 conference schools. Randolph-Macon was picked first with 121 points and 11 first-place votes, while VWU was chosen second with 104 points, followed by Roanoke in third with 103 points and the other first-place vote, H-SC (fourth, 96) and Lynchburg with 81 points to round-out the Top Five. The remainder of the poll includes Shenandoah (64), Guilford (58) and Washington and Lee (58), Averett (34), Bridgewater (33), Randolph (26) and Eastern Mennonite (14).

Scheduling Toughness
H-SC will play another difficult schedule this season, one that includes seven schools ranked among the D3hoops.com Preseason Top 25, including No. 2 Randolph-Macon, No. 3 Emory (GA), No. 6 Redlands (CA)—who defeated the Tigers 83-72 in the third round of the NCAA Tournament last March 14—No. 7 UWL, No. 10 Roanoke, No. 14 VWU, No. 21 Maryville (TN) and possibly KSC, who is receiving votes in the preseason poll.

The Team Three-Point Stat
H-SC has made at least one three-point field goal in 522 consecutive games, dating back to a 2005 home game vs. Emory & Henry (12/3, 0-1 3FGA). Ironically, the Tigers won that high-scoring contest ... 130-99 without making a three-pointer.

Program History
H-SC is competing in its 116th-year of basketball during 2025-26. The Tigers begin this season with an overall program record of 1,540-1,102 since beginning in 1908. H-SC has now posted 64 winning seasons, 18 seasons with at least 20 wins, six seasons with at least 25 wins, has won a record 11 ODAC Tournament Championships.

NCAA Tournament History
H-SC has made 17 NCAA Tournament appearances since 1989, winning at least one game in 14 of the 17 years, while compiling an overall NCAA Tournament record of 27-18. The Tigers advanced to the Final Four in 1999, 2003 and 2024, and to the National Championship in 1999 and 2024. H-SC was National Runner-Up in 2024, falling to Trine (IN) 69-61, as well as in 1999, falling to UW-Platteville 76-75 in double-overtime. The Tigers fell to Gustavus Adolphus (MN) 79-68 in the 2003 National Semifinals. H-SC advanced to the Elite Eight in 1995, 1998, 1999, 2003 and 2024, while reaching the Sweet 16 in 1992, 1994, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2003, 2024 and 2025. The Tigers have hosted 24 NCAA Tournament games since 1992, compiling an impressive record of 19-5.

Former Tigers Are Division I Head Coaches
H-SC currently has two former basketball team members and graduates of the College that are serving as NCAA Division I head coaches. Russell Turner '92 is in his 16th year at UC Irvine and Ryan Odom '96 is in his first season at Virginia and his 10th season as a DI head coach (UMBC, Utah State, VCU). Through Nov. 5, Turner was 322-187 at UCI (1-0 this season) and Odom was 202-117 overall, including 1-0 this season, 52-21 in two years at VCU, 44-25 in two years at USU and 97-60 in five years at UMBC. Griff Aldrich '96 is in his first season as the associate head coach at UVA after serving as head coach at Longwood the past seven seasons where he was 127-100 overall. Add sixth-year Memphis head football coach Ryan Silverfield '03 (50-22, 8-1 this season) and the Tigers have four alumni serving as DI head coaches or as an associate head coach.
