(RV)Hampden-Sydney (#3 Seed) Defeats #6 Seed Randolph 4-1 In 2025 ODAC Tournament Quarterfinals

HAMPDEN-SYNDEY, Va. -- No. 3 seed Hampden-Sydney College got goals from four different scorers to take a 4-1 win in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Quarterfinals against the No. 6 seed Randolph College on Saturday afternoon at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.

After a feeling-out period by the Tigers, they struck in the 26th minute, as a pass found senior Pierce Boerner (Midlothian), whose first pass was blocked, but his second found senior Victor Ovalle-Mares (Atlanta, GA) on the left side to pass it into the net left-footed to open the scoring. H-SC doubled its tally 14 minutes later, as junior Kaden Sawyer (Virginia Beach) hit a long ball to junior Tyler Petz (Cary, NC), who chested it over to Boerner for the headed finish to take a 2-0 lead into the break.

Out of the break, the Tigers wasted no time adding to their lead, as just under three minutes after the second half kick-off, a cross was redirected off a Randolph defender, hitting the shoulder of Ovalle-Mares before landing at the feet of sophomore Colin Mason (Lynchburg, VA), who took a touch to his right and put it into the top right corner. The WildCats clawed one back in the 61st minute after they converted a penalty. The Tigers had one more goal up their sleeve, as off a corner, Sawyer had his shot blocked and on the volley, freshman Owen Edwards (Matthews, NC) unleashed a perfect shot into the top right corner, for one of the goals of the season to make it 4-1. H-SC held on from there, only allowing one shot in the final seven minutes and seven seconds, which was saved by freshman goalie Stig Larson (Richmond) to secure a 4-1 win and move on to the semifinals.

H-SC held the advantage in shots (20-6) and shots on target (9-4), but the sides were even with three corner kicks each.

Larson earned his 13th win in net this season, making three saves.

The Tigers will await the winner of Washington and Lee University and Randolph-Macon College. The game will be played on Wednesday, November 5, at a time and location to be determined.
