(RV)Hampden-Sydney Runs Past Randolph-Macon 3-1 To Close Regular Season

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College got three goals from three different goalscorers to take a 3-1 win over rival Randolph-Macon College in the regular and Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) finale on a rainy Wednesday night at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.

The Yellow Jackets struck first to start the wet contest, taking the lead on a headed effort right in front of the goal line. Just over nine minutes later, the Tigers were awarded a penalty on a handball in the box, and senior Charlie Letson (Wilmington, NC) stepped up and buried it as the goalie guessed the other way. H-SC had one more goal in it before the half, as with 11 seconds left, the ball came out to freshman Jackson Robbins (Glen Allen), who struck it first time, and as it pinballed off bodies, it deflected off freshman Ubaid Wasi (Meherrin) for the goal to give H-SC a 2-1 lead before the break.

The Tigers were the only side to find the back of the net in the second half, as off a corner in the 65th minute, senior Victor Ovalle-Mares (Atlanta, GA) drove a low corner to the edge of the box for freshman Owen Edwards (Matthews, NC), who took one touch and ripped it into the left side of the net. H-SC held strong from there, only allowing one shot the rest of the way that was handled by freshman goalie Stig Larson (Richmond) to secure the 3-1 victory.

The Tigers had the advantage all night offensively, taking 20 shots compared to six for the Yellow Jackets, with 11 of those finding the target compared to five.

Larson got his 12th win in net this season, making three saves.

The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, November 1, when they host Randolph College in the ODAC Quarterfinals.
