Everett Stadium. The host Tigers (6-1, 4-1) led just 7-3 at halftime before outscoring the visiting Maroons (4-3, 2-3) 28-7 in the second half during Homecoming Weekend on the Hill with a crowd of 12,123, one of the largest at the College in the last 15 seasons.
"Really proud of the response in the second half," said second-year head coach
Vince Luvara. "That was a team effort verse a very good football team."
H-SC, receiving votes this week in both the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA)
D3 Coaches Poll (23) and the
D3football.com Top 25 (3), took the opening possession of the game and drove 86 yards on 11 plays to the RC five-yard line, only to turn the ball over on downs with an incompletion on fourth-and-two. Consecutive completions of 22 yards to Cunningham and 40 yards to senior wide receiver
Jordan Jackson (Fredericksburg), along with an 11-yard completion to Cunningham sparked the first drive.
The Maroons then drove 76 yards on 10 plays, but missed a 36-yard field goal attempt, providing for a scoreless opening 15 minutes.
RC did manage to get on the scoreboard first when Ethan Cyr connected on a 35-yard field goal at 8:52 of the second quarter for a 3-0 advantage. Prior to the three points, it appeared that the visitors had scored on a 68-yard touchdown run; however, and unsportsmanlike penalty was called on the ball carrier at the three-yard line, nullifying the touchdown and placing the ball at the Tigers' 18 and three plays netted no gain.
The Maroons got the ball back after an H-SC punt and drove to the home team's 13-yard line, but missed a 30-yard field goal attempt with 2:56 left in the half.
The Garnet & Grey took advantage this time and drove 80 yards on nine plays with Sido finding Mahoney for a 28-yard touchdown pass with just 39-seconds on the second-quarter clock. Freshman placekicker
Davis Dudley (Charlotte, NC) added the first of his five PAT kicks for a 7-3 lead at halftime. Hicks covered 39 yards on the ground, including a 13-yard run, while Cunningham had a 13-yard reception during the possession, as well.
H-SC's defense forced a three-and-out by RC on first possession of the second half and the Tigers promptly went 66 yards on seven plays with Sido finding Cunningham over the middle for a 33-yard touchdown pass at 10:43 for a 14-3 lead. Hicks totaled 16 yards, including a seven-yard reception, while Jackson had an 11-yard reception.
Senior safety and team captain
Markevus Graves-Franklin (Lynchburg) made an interception on the next possession, but a strip-sack two plays later gave the ball back to the Maroons on the Garnet & Grey's 26-yard line. The defense once-again stood tall and four plays netted five yards as the visitors turned it back over on downs.
H-SC took over at its 21 and marched 79 yards on seven plays with Sido and Mahoney connecting on another 28-yard touchdown pass, this time with 4:47 left in the third quarter as Mahoney was free down the left sideline. The possession was aided by a 12-yard completion to Hicks and a 20-yard completion to sophomore wide receiver
Manning Lasso (Raleigh, NC) that included an unnecessary roughness penalty, as well, for a 21-3 margin.
RC answered back with a 16-yard touchdown run by Kam Hill on fourth down with just 29-seconds on the third quarter clock, and Cyr's PAT kick provided for a 21-10 margin entering the fourth quarter.
H-SC responded quickly as senior running back/kick return specialist
Joseph Gonzalez (Spotsylvania) returned the ensuing kickoff 40 yards to midfield and a 42-yard completion to Lasso on second down set-up a five-yard touchdown run by Hicks at 14:36 of the final quarter. The three-play, 50-yard drive took just 45-seconds and the hosts led 28-10.
Following another punt by the visitors, the Tigers drove to the Maroons' six-yard line, but an interception in the end zone prevented more points on the board. RC turned it over on downs at their own 43 with 6:43 remaining and the Garnet & Grey needed just four plays (and another defensive penalty) to score with Gonzalez adding a six-yard touchdown run at 5:20 for the final 35-10 margin of victory. Hicks and Gonzalez each covered 14 yards on two attempts each, while aided by the 15-yard unsportsmanlike flag, as well.
RC had to punt on its final possession and the Tigers gained a pair of first downs, including a 23-yard completion to Cunningham, before kneeling down three times to end the game.
