(RV)Hampden-Sydney Knocks Off No. 18 Lynchburg 2-0

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Senior forward Walker Stebbings (Forest) scored twice within a minute to give Hampden-Sydney College a 2-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win over nationally-ranked No. 18 University of Lynchburg on Wednesday night at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.

The first half was a cagey affair between the two sides, with both sides close on shots at five to four in favor of the Hornets. Lynchburg, however, was on the attack more, with the Tigers looking for opportunities on the counterattack. This led to a 0-0 stalemate at the end of the first 45 minutes.

The second half was a different story, with the offenses getting going and the Tigers being the ones on the front foot, putting pressure on the Lynchburg defense. Stebbings had a good chance saved in the 56th minute and looked ready to capitalize on the next opportunity, and he did in the 80th minute, getting a pass on the left side from sophomore Zakky Johnston (Meherrin), taking a touch to his right and firing a perfect shot into the far side netting. It took just 48 seconds after for Stebbings to double his tally, as the Hornets thought a foul was going to be called as sophomore Kevin Nova Euceda (Woodbridge) cleared the ball forward and Stebbings ran onto, took three dribbles, and passed it into the bottom left corner. Freshman goalie Stig Larson (Richmond) then made an important save at his near post 16 seconds later to keep the lead at two, where it stayed after two more shots from Lynchburg did not trouble Larson to secure H-SC a 2-0 win.

The Tigers held the advantage in shots with 15-13, with both teams finding the target five times.

Larson got his ninth win in net, posting a career-high five saves to earn his sixth shutout of the season.

The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, October 18, when they travel to Salem to take on Roanoke College in ODAC action. Kick-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Donald J. Kerr Stadium.
