WINCHESTER, Va. -- Senior midfielder
Victor Ovalle-Mares (Atlanta, GA) scored a beautiful goal from outside the box to help Hampden-Sydney College grab a 1-1 draw in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action at Shenandoah University on Saturday evening at Shentel Stadium.
The Hornets grabbed the lead in the first half, in the 11th minute, with their own strike from outside the box. The final 15 minutes of the half, however, saw the Tigers in full control, holding possession in the Shenandoah half of the field, just without being able to find the goal to level it.
H-SC continued to keep the pressure on Shenandoah in the second half, and finally found equalizer in the 69th minute, as off a free kick, the ball was punched by the goalie, but sophomore
Colin Mason (Lynchburg) directed the loose ball to Ovalle-Mares, who took one touch and unleashed a perfect shot into the bottom left corner. The final 20 minutes saw both sides call the goalies into action, but nobody found the back of the net for a 1-1 draw.
The Tigers out shot the Hornets 12 to eight, while also having the edge in shots on goal (6-4) and corners (7-5).
Freshman goalie
Stig Larson (Richmond) made three saves, including a big save at his near post in the second half, to keep the game tied.
The Tigers will be back in action when they return home to host No. 17 University of Lynchburg in ODAC action on Wednesday, October 15. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
