Hampden-Sydney Falls 2-1 To Mount Union (OH) In Heartbreaking Fashion

RICHMOND, Va. -- Junior Pierce Boerner (Midlothian) scored a goal to equalize but Hampden-Sydney College fell to the University of Mount Union (OH), 2-1, Sunday morning at City Stadium in Richmond.

The Purple Raiders opened the scoring in the first half, getting on the board in the 30th minute to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Tigers waited until the 71st minute to tie the game up, as junior Jaques Lavielle (Cary, NC) delivered a free kick into the box that bounced around and found Boerner alone for the tap-in goal. The game looked destined for a draw, but with 58 seconds left, Mount Union headed home a goal to grab a 2-1 victory.

Both sides were close in terms of shots with H-SC taking one more shot than Mount Union, but the Purple Raiders found the target more often, holding a seven to four advantage in shots on target.

Senior Wills Huddleston (Baldwin, MD) made five saves in the loss.

The Tigers will return home on Saturday, September 21 when they host a non-conference game against Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opponent Guilford (NC) College. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
