Hampden-Sydney Opens 2024 Campaign With A 5-0 Win Over Greensboro (NC)

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College used five different goalscorers to take a 5-0 season-opening, non-conference victory over Greensboro (NC) College on Friday night at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.

The Tigers got the scoring started in the 12th minute, as the ball bounced around in the box before sophomore Mo Wumpini (Chattanooga, TN) poked the ball out to junior Charlie Letson (Wilmington, NC) to flick over the goalie. H-SC doubled its tally as a free kick delivery from junior Jaques Lavielle (Cary, NC) found the head of sophomore Tyler Petz (Cary, NC), but the goalie saved his shot and the rebound fell into the path of senior Justin Varela (Midlothian) for the tap-in goal. The Tigers added one more in the first half in the 32nd minute as Petz delivered a cross right to the near post from the left wing, finding the run of junior Pierce Boerner (Midlothian) for the first-time finish and a 3-0 lead into halftime.

H-SC added to its lead in the 78th minute, as the ball came off the Greensboro defense right into the path of senior Jack Delaney (Virginia Beach), who struck it sweetly into the bottom left-hand corner to push the lead to 4-0. Under three minutes later, the Tigers struck again as freshman Colin Mason (Lynchburg) delivered a perfect cross across the box to junior Landon Niday (Roanoke) to hit first time off a defender and into the back of the net and take a 5-0 win.

H-SC played great defense to earn the shutout, only allowing three total shots and calling senior goalie Wills Huddleston (Baldwin, MD) into action once.

The Tigers will be back in action when they travel to Arlington to take on Marymount University on Sunday, September 1. Kick-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Long Bridge Park.
