HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Senior
Ray O'Brien (Scituate, MA) scored his 200th career point but it was not enough as Hampden-Sydney College fell in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action to Roanoke College 14-8, Saturday afternoon at Lewis C. Everett Stadium.
"As a team, we simply did not make the plays today that are necessary to win a game against another top ODAC team," said head coach
Jason Rostan '03. "We were proud of a good stretch before halftime, but we didn't execute well enough as a whole throughout and played too much of the game a man down. Tomorrow is a new day and we will get back to work next week to prepare for an important stretch ahead."
The Maroons opened the scoring in the first quarter, scoring within a minute to take the lead. H-SC responded seven minutes and 43 seconds later, as senior
Michael Leone (Vienna) got the pass and made several fakes in front of the goalie to get him out of position and finish. Roanoke closed the quarter on a two-goal run to make it 3-1 after 15 minutes.
The Maroons kept their run going in the second quarter, scoring three more times without a response to give them a 7-1 lead with 9:37 remaining. The Tigers got hot from there, starting with a goal from O'Brien who caught the pass from junior
Campion White (Apex, NC) and took it straight to the net for the finish. H-SC made it two straight as sophomore
Patrick Hanes (Raleigh, NC) played a short pass to his right to find junior
Ford Burke (Richmond) for the sidearm finish up a man. Hanes got his first of the afternoon, as he spun around a defender and fired a shot into the bottom right corner. O'Brien got his second, as he used a screen from sophomore
Davis Mack (Henrico) to give him a step on his defender as he took it all the way to the net to finish off the play. 37 seconds later, the Roanoke lead was cut to one, as O'Brien passed the ball from behind the net to Hanes for him to wind up and fire a shot into the bottom left corner and make it 7-6 going into halftime.
Roanoke grabbed control of the game in the third quarter, scoring six while H-SC could not find the back of the net to make it 13-6 going into the fourth quarter.
The Maroons made it seven unanswered goals, as one minute into the fourth quarter they found the back of the net again. Saunders broke the scoring drought for the Tigers, beating his man with a spin move and finishing in the left side of the net with 3:18 remaining. Saunders made it two straight as he got the pass from Burke and fired it into the back of the net to bring the scoring to a close.
O'Brien and Hanes were the top scorers, each with two goals and one assist and Saunders scored two goals as well. Burke had one goal and one assist, Leone had one goal, and White had one assist. Junior
Conor Kilfeather (Wyndmoor, PA) caused four turnovers and picked up eight ground balls.'
Senior
Peter Smith (Warrenton) picked up the loss despite making 22 saves on 36 shots on target.
The Tigers will be back in action for another ODAC game when they host Bridgewater College. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Lewis C. Everett Stadium.
