Hampden-Sydney Takes Down Bridgewater 15-9

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Sophomore Davis Mack (Henrico) scored three goals and senior Ray O'Brien (Scituate, MA) scored three goals and added an assist to help Hampden-Sydney College pick up a 15-9 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win over Bridgewater College, Saturday afternoon at Lewis C. Everett Stadium.

"It was good to get an ODAC win today," said head coach Jason Rostan '03. "We look forward to an important week of preparation and improving this week."

H-SC got the scoring started three minutes and 20 seconds into the first quarter, as O'Brien found sophomore Patrick Hanes (Raleigh, NC) who took a few steps towards the goal and fired home the shot. Bridgewater answered, getting one of their own, before the Tigers scored a spectacular goal, as senior Ford Burke (Richmond) fell but was able to make a pass while rolling on the ground to senior Michael Leone (Vienna) for the shot fake and finish. Bridgewater answered once more as they tied the game at two going into the second quarter.

The Eagles got the scoring started in the second quarter, scoring one minute and 17 seconds after play resumed. Mack got his first of the game just over a minute later, as Hanes found him with a low pass that helped him spin around a reaching defender and bounce the ball past the goalie. O'Brien gave the Tigers the lead, as he got the pass from Burke and made a big fake to his left before swimming over the stick of the defender and firing from up top into the left corner. O'Brien made it two straight in less than a minute, as he caught and finished the pass from Leone in front of the crease. Bridgewater responded again, scoring two unanswered to tie the game at five. H-SC grabbed the lead back with 3:53 remaining, as senior Patrick Saunders (Alexandria) fed Burke in the middle of the defense for him to turn and fire a shot off both posts and in. The Eagles answered back once again, scoring with 2:03 left in the quarter to knot the game up again. H-SC closed out the quarter in style, first scoring with six seconds left in the game as freshman Cameron Van Lunen (Apex, NC) rifled a shot into the back of the net. On the next face-off, junior Conor Kilfeather (Wyndmoor, PA) lost the draw but immediately got the ball back for the Tigers with a caused turnover, and junior Gaines Weis (Richmond) picked up the loose ball and passed ahead to sophomore Cameron Young (Chantilly) to find senior Luke Helfgott (Arlington) on the side of the crease for the shot and finish before the clock hit zero to make it 8-6 in favor of the Tigers going into halftime.

H-SC kept its run going into the second half, as five seconds into the third quarter, O'Brien picked up a loose ball and bounced the ball over the shoulder of the goalie. Mack got his second of the game, as on a restart he took the ball from behind the net and finished into the top right corner of the net. Mack made it two straight for himself, as he got the pass on the left wing from Leone and rifled a bounce shot past an outstretched goalie. Junior Griff Ray (Lexington) made six unanswered goals between the second and third quarters, as he took the ball down the right wing and fired the shot inside the far post and in. The Eagles clawed a few back before the end of the quarter, closing on a two-goal run to make it 12-8 in favor of H-SC going into the final 15 minutes.

H-SC extended its lead to five in less than a minute after the fourth quarter started, as Saunders took the ball from up top and started running down the right wing before firing a shot across his body into the top left corner. Bridgewater answered the goal once more, scoring with 9:39 left in the quarter. Freshman Alex Wagner (Cary, NC) scored his first of the afternoon, as he took his man from behind the net and used a quick turn on the right wing to make space before bouncing the ball through the legs of the keeper. Burke closed off the scoring in the game, as on the break Van Lunen made a pass from the left wing to the right wing to find Burke open for the sidearm shot into the top of the net and make it 15-9.

O'Brien had three goals and one assist, and Mack also scored three goals on the afternoon. Burke had two goals and one assist, while Leone had one goal and two assists. Saunders, Hanes, and Van Lunen each had a goal and an assist. Helfgott, Ray, and Wagner each had one goal and Young had an assist. Kilfeather had six ground balls and four caused turnovers, and sophomore Tyler Steele (Pinehurst, NC) also had four caused turnovers to go with four ground balls.

Senior goalie Peter Smith (Warrenton) made nine saves on 18 shots on target to earn the win.

The Tigers will be back in action for senior day on Saturday, April 20, when they play host to the University of Lynchburg. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Lewis C. Everett Stadium.
