Hampden-Sydney Falls To No. 16 Lynchburg 14-6 On Senior Day

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Senior Ford Burke (Richmond) scored two goals and added an assist and senior Ray O'Brien (Scituate, MA) scored two goals but Hampden-Sydney College fell to nationally ranked No. 16 University of Lynchburg 14-6 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action on senior day, Saturday afternoon at Lewis C. Everett Stadium.

H-SC opened the scoring in the game at the 12:35 mark, as senior Michael Leone (Vienna) found Burke on the opposite wing for the sidearm finish. The Hornets answered back, scoring four unanswered to close the quarter and take a 4-1 into the second quarter.

The Hornets kept it going to start the second, scoring three unanswered goals to take a 7-1 lead with 9:49 remaining. Burke broke the run just a minute and 24 seconds later, as he got the pass from behind the net from junior Campion White (Apex, NC) before turning and firing a shot between the sticks of two defenders for the goal. The Tigers made it two unanswered, as Burke fed sophomore Davis Mack (Henrico) as he was cutting for the catch and finish, as the goal cut the Lynchburg lead to 7-3 going into halftime.

Lynchburg opened the third quarter with another scoring run, finding the back of the net four times to make it 11-3 halfway through the quarter. Less than a minute later, O'Brien scored his first of the afternoon, taking it around the back of the net and squeezing a bounce shot through traffic to find the back of the net. Just over two minutes late, H-SC struck again as following a caused turnover by junior Conor Kilfeather (Wyndmoor, PA) he broke down the field as senior Hank Van Ness (Richmond) picked up the loose ball and got it to Kilfeather before midfield and he did the rest, taking it down the field and finishing in the top right corner. Lynchburg responded, scoring a goal with 2:17 remaining to make it 12-5 going into the fourth quarter.

H-SC opened the scoring in the fourth quarter, as senior Thomas Harry (Troy) picked up the loose ball following a Lynchburg turnover and started the break, passing the ball to Leone who quickly threw a pass to an open O'Brien for the quick catch and finish to cut the lead to six with 10:53 remaining. Unfortunately, the Tigers were held scoreless the rest of the game, as Lynchburg scored two more goals to make the final score 14-6.

Burke had two goals and an assist and O'Brien had two goals to lead the Tigers in scoring. Leone had two assists, while Kilfeather and Mack each scored a goal. White added one assist for the Tigers on the afternoon. Kilfeather in addition to his goal, caused four turnovers and grabbed four ground balls. Weis also caused four turnovers and three ground balls while Harry grabbed five ground balls and added two caused turnovers.

Senior Peter Smith (Warrenton) got the loss, making six saves on 20 shots on target.

The Tigers will be back in action on Wednesday, April 24 when they play host to Virginia Wesleyan University to close out the regular season. The ODAC clash is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at Lewis C. Everett Stadium.
