Ford Burke (Richmond) scored a career-high six goals while seniors
Michael Leone (Vienna) and
Ray O'Brien (Scituate, MA) scored three goals and tallied two assists as Hampden-Sydney College took a 21-6 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Virginia Wesleyan University, Wednesday evening at Lewis C. Everett Stadium.
"Our team has worked hard all year and we are proud of each of our guys for all they have earned as a team this regular season," said head coach
Jason Rostan '03. "Our sights and full focus will turn to the ODAC tournament and the opportunity to compete for a championship starting this coming week."
The Marlins led off the game with a goal in less than a minute to take an early 1-0 lead. O'Brien leveled the score two minutes later, as he took the ball down the left side and bounced a shot through the legs of the goalie. Six minutes later, the Tigers had the lead as Leone came off a screen from junior
Griff Ray (Lexington) and bounced the shot through the legs of the goalie. Burke got his first of the evening just 16 seconds later, as O'Brien found him for the sidearm finish on the right side of the net. Burke made it two straight, as junior
Conor Kilfeather (Wyndmoor, PA) made a beautiful no-look pass around a defender to Burke for the shot fake and finish. Burke sealed his hat trick as he took the ball from behind the net and bounced it into the far corner from the left side of the crease to make it 5-1 in favor of H-SC after 15 minutes of action.

Campion White (Apex, NC) kept the scoring run going into the second quarter, as sophomore
Patrick Hanes (Raleigh, NC) drove and kicked it back to an open White who rifled a shot over the shoulder of the goalie. H-SC got its first goal on the man advantage, as O'Brien picked up a loose ball and moved a defender with his eyes before dishing to Leone for the catch and finish. White struck again less than a minute later as Hanes passed him the ball from behind the net and White had loads of space to wind up and rifle a shot into the back of the net to make it eight unanswered goals. Patrick Saunders (Alexandria) took the ball from up top and beat his man down the middle for a running finish. 30 seconds after Saunders' goal, the lead was eight as Burke beat his man behind the net and fired a shot between the legs of the goalie. Burke got his fifth, as he came off a screen from freshman
Alex Wagner (Cary, NC) and finished the play exactly the same as his previous goal. The Tigers got the lead to 10 as the shot from Burke was blocked up Leone picked up the loose ball and beat the keeper with 30 seconds left. The Marlins quickly answered, getting a goal 16 seconds later to make it 12-3 at halftime.
The Tigers wasted no time getting the second half rolling, as eight seconds in Leone found O'Brien cutting to the net for the easy finish. Burke got his sixth of the night less than a minute later, as he got the pass from Hanes and gave the goalie a shot fake before bouncing the ball home. O'Brien got his third of the evening just 35 seconds later, as Leone found him cutting to the net and he finished up and over the shoulders of the goalie. Freshman
Trey Black (Pinehurst, NC) got his first of the evening as he got the pass from freshman
Landon Honig (Glen Allen) and raced down the right side before putting the ball inside the far post. Just over a minute later it was Honig's turn to score, as he picked up a loose ball and took it straight to the net with the shot clock running down and bounced it over the shoulder of the goalie and in. H-SC scored on the man advantage for the second time in the game, as 31 seconds after Honig's goal Wagner found Ray on the right side and he ripped a shot through the legs of the goalie. Freshman
Drew Filipovits (Schnecksville, PA) got his name in the scoresheet as he beat two defenders on his way to the net and finished over the shoulder of the goalie to cap off a seven-goal run. The Marlins got one back before the end of the quarter to make it 19-4 after 45 minutes of play.
Black got the scoring rolling in the fourth quarter as senior
Luke Helfgott (Arlington) found him in some space to sidestep a defender and put the ball home. The Marlins got one back before Helfgott struck as he got the pass from senior
Hunter Eppleman (Virginia Beach) following him intercepting a pass and Helfgott had time to beat the keeper. Virginia Wesleyan got one more goal before the final whistle but H-SC took a 21-6 win.
Burke had six goals on the evening with Leone and O'Brien each tallying three goals and two assists. White and Black each had two goals and Saunders, Ray, and Filipovits each had a goal. Helfgott and Honig each had a goal and an assist. Hanes led the game with three assists, while Wagner and Kilfeather each had one assist. Eppleman had an assist to go along with two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Senior

Peter Smith (Warrenton) got the win, playing the first half of the game and making five saves on eight shots on target. Sophomore

Holt Blythe (Virginia Beach) played 9:33 and made three saves on four shots on target.
