HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College, ranked No. 1 in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, welcomes Rowan University in the third round of the 2024 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship on Friday night, March 8, at 7 p.m. in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium at Kirby Field House. The top-ranked Tigers are 28-2 overall following a 72-51 home win past (RV)Farmingdale State (NY) in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on March 2 in Fleet Gym—and making their seventh Sweet 16 appearance in program history. The Profs are 21-7 overall after an 89-85 road win at No. 14 Catholic in the second round on March 2 in Washington, D.C. H-SC is hosting one of four
NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Sectional Championships on Friday and Saturday, March 8-9, in Fleet Gym. The Tigers welcome Claremont-Mudd-Scripps from Claremont, California, Nebraska Wesleyan University from Lincoln, Nebraska and Rowan University from Glassboro, New Jersey. CMS (23-6) and NWU (25-4) will play on Friday, March 8, at 4 p.m., while the nationally-ranked No. 1 Tigers will play Rowan on Friday, March 8, at 7 p.m. The two winners will play on Saturday, March 9, at 7 p.m. for a trip to the Final Four in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Head Coach Caleb Kimbrough
H-SC is led by the fifth-year head coach who took over the program on April 4, 2019. The former head coach at Huntingdon (AL) College from 2016-19, Kimbrough is the 19th head coach in the 114-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. He is no stranger to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), having played four years at Guilford (NC) College and coached six years with the Quakers, and one year at Washington and Lee. Kimbrough is 80-37 overall at the College, including 45-23 in ODAC games. Scouting No. 1 Hampden-Sydney
The 2024 ODAC Tournament Champions have nine-straight wins and 23 wins in their last 24 games overall. H-SC is enjoying its finest season in 21 years, when also 28-2 through 30 games in 2002-03, the last time the program advanced to the Sectionals, as well. The 28 overall wins equal the second-most all-time and are the most under Coach Kimbrough. In addition, the Tigers won their record-11th ODAC Tournament title on February 25, while playing in their record-16th ODAC championship game. H-SC has attained only its sixth 25-win season in program history, while its 17th 20-win season, also the second consecutive 20-win campaign to mark the first time since 2002-03 (28-4) and 2003-04 (25-5) with back-to-back 20-win seasons.
The Tigers are extremely balanced offensively with three players averaging in double-figure scoring among its five starters that are each scoring at least 6.4 points per game, while seven Tigers are playing nearly 15 minutes among 11 playing nearly eight minutes per game. Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) (7.0 points, 4.1 rebounds) and senior guard
Alex Elliott (Marietta, GA) (6.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, 28 3FGs). Fifth-year guard
Chase Turner (Virginia Beach) (4.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists), fifth-year forward and team captain
Miles Harris (Virginia Beach) (4.0 points, 3.4 rebounds, 28 3FGs) and sophomore forward
Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) (4.5 points) have provided solid depth.
H-SC is shooting 46% (844-1827) from the field, including 36% (240-664) on three-point field goals (8.0 per game), and 74% (317-431) at the free throw line. The Tigers have averaged 74.8Â points, and allowed only 57.6 points, for an impressive +17.2 scoring margin.
Scouting Rowan
The Profs, who received a Pool C at-large invitation, are making their third-straight and 16th overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Rowan is coached by first-year interim head coach Eric Brennan, and has won two-straight games and nine of 11 overall. The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) regular season champions have been led by senior forward Ja'Zere Noel, the back-to-back NJAC Player of the Year, with his 21.4 points (51 3FGs) and 9.8 rebounds. Junior guard Khalif Meares, the NJAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year, adds 19.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists and a DIII-best 3.6 steals, while senior guard Marcellus Ross averages 19.0 points (92 3FGs). The high-scoring Profs shoot 44% (862-1942) from the field, including 36% (235-660) on three-pointers (8.4 per game), and 78% (547-699) at the line; scoring 89.5 points, and yielding 81.3 points, for a +8.2 scoring margin.

H-SC has won nine consecutive games since dropping a 48-46 decision at home to then-No. 8 Randolph-Macon on Feb. 3. The average margin has been 20.9 points, including four by 24 or more points, and none by less than 10 points. The Tigers won their first and second round NCAA Tournament games by an average of 29.0 points—
98-61 past La Roche (PA) on March 1 and
72-51 past Farmingdale State.
What An NCAA Tournament Debut
Shane Fernald averaged 11.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists off the bench while playing in his first two career NCAA Tournament games on March 1-2. The 6-7, 260-pound forward was 11-12 from the field (92%) during his 26 minutes of total playing time in the two games.
NCAA Tournament History
H-SC is making its 16th overall NCAA Tournament appearance since 1989, and now winning at least one game in 13 of the 16 years, while compiling an NCAA Tournament record of 22-16. The Tigers were National Runners-Up in 1999, falling to UW-Platteville 76-75 in double-overtime in the National Championship contest, and the Garnet & Grey advanced to the Final Four in 2003, falling to Gustavus Adolphus (MN) 79-68 in the National Semifinals, before falling to Wooster (OH) 78-74 in the third-place game. H-SC advanced to the Elite Eight in 1995, while reaching the Sweet 16 in 1992, 1994 and 1998. The Tigers have now hosted 20 NCAA Tournament games since 1992, compiling an impressive 15-5 record in those games.
2024 ODAC Tournament Honors
Adam Brazil was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2024 ODAC Tournament after averaging 17.3 points (9 3FGs), 6.0 rebounds and 4.3 assists in three games. He was joined on the All-Tournament Team by
Davidson Hubbard (18.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, 7 3FGs, 5 blocks) and
Josiah Hardy (11.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, 64% FGs).
2023-24 All-ODAC Honors
Davidson Hubbard and
Adam Brazil were each named First Team All-ODAC, while
Ryan Clements was named Third Team All-ODAC, as announced on Feb. 21. Clements was named All-ODAC for the third time—also Third Team in 2022-23 and Second Team in 2021-22, while Hubbard and Brazil were named All-ODAC for the second time—Hubbard was also First Team in 2022-23, and Brazil was Second Team last year.
2023-24 ODAC Scholar-Athlete Award
Adam Brazil garnered
ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors from the league's athletic communications personnel. Adam is an English major and Dean's List student with a 3.81 GPA, while a three-time member of the ODAC All-Academic Team (2021-23).
100 Collegiate Coaching Wins
Caleb Kimbrough won his 100th game as a collegiate head coach with a 71-47 road win at Virginia Wesleyan on Feb. 14 in Virginia Beach. Coach Kimbrough is currently 106-77 in eight years, including 80-37 in five years at H-SC.

H-SC was ranked first among the
NCAA Division III Top 16 (Feb. 15), while remaining first in
Region VI of the NCAA Regional Rankings (Feb. 26) following Selection Monday.

Prior to the third round, H-SC ranked second nationally in winning percentage (.933), fourth in scoring margin (17.2), fifth in scoring defense (57.6), seventh in field goal percentage defense (37.7), ninth in both rebound margin (8.8) and assist/turnover ratio (1.50), 28th in fewest turnovers (10.7), 35th in turnover margin (3.5) and 39th in three-point percentage (36.1).

It marked the second consecutive and seventh week this season at No. 1, while the Tigers have been ranked among the top five nationally for 10 of 12 weeks during 2023-24. H-SC has wins this season past No. 2 John Carroll (OH), No. 4 Randolph-Macon, No. 16 Widener and No. 23 Christopher Newport.

Program History
H-SC is competing in its 114th-year of basketball during 2023-24. The Tigers began this season with an overall record of 1486-1093 since beginning in 1908, and currently are 1514-1095. H-SC has posted 63 winning seasons (this season included), 17 seasons with at least 20 wins (this season included), six seasons with at least 25 wins (this season included) and has now won a record 11 ODAC Tournament Championships and is making its 16th NCAA Division III Tournament appearance. The Tigers have advanced to the Final Four two times previously, and to the National Championship once.

Griff Aldrich '96 is in his sixth year at Longwood. Through March 5, Turner was 287-178 at UCI (22-8 this season) ... Odom was 160-96 overall, including 19-11 at VCU this season, 44-25 in two years at USU and 97-60 in five years at UMBC ... Aldrich was 106-85 at Longwood (18-13 this season).
