Hampden-Sydney Falls 11-10 To No. 12 Washington and Lee As Comeback Falls Just Short

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior Patrick Saunders (Alexandria) scored two goals and added two assists, while junior Campion White (Apex, NC) scored two goals to go along with one assist, but it was not enough as Hampden-Sydney College fell to No. 12 Washington and Lee University 11-10 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action, Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

"Today's game was another tight battle between two great programs in a game with a lot of history and tradition," said head coach Jason Rostan '03. "I'm proud of our team's fight we just needed a few more possessions in the clearing or face-off games. We hope to get another opportunity later this season."

The Generals got the scoring started, jumping out to a four-goal lead until the Tigers got on the board with 4:58 remaining in the first quarter, following a caused turnover by junior Gaines Weis (Richmond) found junior Conor Kilfeather (Wyndmoor, PA) they ran the break together and Kilfeather took it all the way to goal for the finish inside the left post. H-SC clawed another one back before the horn, as White lost his footing on a spin move but was able to find Saunders for the rifled finish into the top right corner and end the first 15 minutes trailing 4-2.

H-SC kept the offense rolling in the second, as off a turnover by the Generals, senior Ray O'Brien (Scituate, MA) picked up the loose ball and ran down the field to find senior Ford Burke (Richmond) for the bounced finish. Saunders returned the favor to White to tie the game, as he found White in a pocket of space for him to turn and fire home the shot. After a goal by the Generals, White scored his second straight as he took the ball down the left side and fired a left-handed shot inside the far post to tie the game again. The Tigers grabbed their first lead of the game as O'Brien found the cut of Leone who turned over his left shoulder and put the ball over the outstretched stick of the goalie to take a 6-5 lead into halftime.

The Generals tied the game and then took back the lead in the third quarter as they held the Tigers scoreless while scoring five to take a 10-5 lead going into the fourth quarter.

H-SC wasted no time cutting into the lead, 36 seconds into the fourth quarter O'Brien found Leone open for the catch and finish in front of the crease. Saunders got his second of the afternoon to cut the lead down to two, as he took the ball down the right side and bounced the ball home. Washington and Lee answered with a goal with just under six minutes remaining to push the lead back to three. Burke got his second of the game to close the gap with 3:20 remaining as he got the pass in the middle of the field before turning and firing a sidearm shot around a closing defender. Less than a minute later the gap was only one, as sophomore Patrick Hanes (Raleigh, NC) had the ball and found O'Brien coming off a screen for the finish. Unfortunately, the Tigers were held scoreless the final 2:37 and fell 11-10.

Saunders scored two goals with two assists, while White scored two goals to go along with an assist. Leone and Burke each scored two goals and Kilfeather scored a goal to go along with four ground balls and three caused turnovers. O'Brien scored one goal and led the Tigers with three assists. Hanes had one assist for the Tigers. Weis caused three turnovers and grabbed four ground balls while senior Thomas Harry (Troy) caused three turnovers and picked up two ground balls.
