Michael Leone (Vienna) scored two goals with two assists to help propel Hampden-Sydney College to a 20-1 win over Averett University in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action, Wednesday night at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
H-SC got the scoring started just over four minutes into the game as freshman
Alex Wagner (Cary, NC) made a move to open space for sophomore
Davis Mack (Henrico) to move into and fire off a sidearm shot for the goal. O'Brien got his first of the day, as he was left open in front of the crease for Leone to find for the easy finish. Off the ensuing face-off, sophomore
Luke Popow (Holly Springs, NC) won the draw and raced down the field finding senior
Ford Burke (Richmond) who quickly found Leone on the left side of the crease for the third goal in less than a minute. Leone scored a second in a row this time on the fastbreak, as Burke found him again in the same position, but he made a move to beat the goalie and score. The Tigers made it five unanswered, as Leone found O'Brien open again in front of the crease with all day to beat the keeper and finish. O'Brien got his hat trick 35 seconds later, as senior
Patrick Saunders (Alexandria) beat his man and found O'Brien cutting across the face of goal for the catch and the bounce finish. Burke got his first of the evening with 6:13 left in the quarter, after getting the pass from Mack, his first shot was saved, but he stuck with it picking up the loose ball and putting it home. Freshman
Jake Bell (Cary, NC) got his first goal of the evening with just 40 seconds left in the quarter, as junior
Griff Ray (Salem) found him in the middle of the field for the catch-and-release shot and go into the second quarter with an 8-0 lead.
The Tigers caught Averett out of position to start the scoring in the second quarter, as off a restart the ball found its way to senior
Luke Helfgott (Arlington) to pass it over to Ray who wound up and fired a shot past the goalie. Junior
Stuart Kyle (Leesburg) got his first goal of the season making a move around a defender before putting the ball inside the post to make it 10-0. H-SC got its second goal of the game on the man advantage, as Ray passed the ball to Wagner who gave it right back to Ray to rifle a shot into the top of the net. Bell got his second of the game, as he took the ball from up top and beat his defender straight downhill, firing a sidearm shot passed the goalie. Following an Averett goal, freshman
Jacob Messinger (Charlottesville) scored his first career goal, beating his defender and getting to the crease before jumping to finish over the goalie. With 13 seconds left in the half, senior
Hunter Eppleman (Virginia Beach) stole a pass by the Averett goalie and took it straight back toward the net finishing in the top right corner to make it 14-1 at halftime.
The Tigers wasted no time scoring in the second half, as Honig made a defender miss and let an underhand shot go that beat the keeper. Freshman
Trey Black (Pinehurst, NC) scored his first of the game spinning around a defender and firing home the left-handed shot. Kyle got his second of the game, as he got the pass from freshman
Ryan Estay (Cypress, TX), he turned around and fired an underhand shot past the goalie. Senior
Holt Blythe (Virginia Beach) scored his first career goal with 45 seconds left in the quarter, as he fired a shot from long distance that found the top of the net and made it 18-1 going into the fourth quarter.
Honig opened the scoring in the fourth quarter as freshman
Drew Filipovits (Schnecksville, PA) ran the break and found Honig on the left wing to rifle a shot past the goalie. Honig added another just under five minutes later, as Black found him cutting off the ball for the turn and finish, closing the scoring and giving H-SC a 20-1 win.
O'Brien and Honig each scored three goals, and Leone scored two goals with two assists. Ray scored two goals and added one assist, while Kyle and Bell scored two goals apiece. Burke scored one goal with two assists and Black scored a goal and added an assist. Mack, Blythe, Messinger, and Eppleman each scored one goal. Saunders, Estay, and Filipovits each tallied one assist.

Owen Hegadorn (Falls Church) made three saves over 11:24 minutes in net. Blythe closed the game out in the net, playing 11:06 minutes.
The Tigers will be back in action when they play against No. 12 Washington and Lee University on Saturday, March 30, in ODAC action. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Wilson Field.
