Hampden-Sydney Shutout Randolph-Macon In The Second Half To Win 11-7

ASHLAND, Va. -- Senior Ray O'Brien (Scituate, MA) scored four goals and added an assist, while senior Michael Leone (Vienna) dished out three assists and scored one goal to help Hampden-Sydney College take an 11-7 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win over Randolph-Macon College, Saturday afternoon at Day Field.

"What a great team effort today," said head coach Jason Rostan '03. "Our team played extremely hard and with a lot of emotion. Our team defense in the second half was tremendous and was a major factor in the game."

It took under a minute for H-SC to take a lead as junior Campion White (Apex, NC) ran around a screen by senior Ford Burke (Richmond) and fired a shot past the goalie. After a goal by the Yellow Jackets, O'Brien got his first of the afternoon, as Leone found him cutting in front of the crease for the goal. The Tigers doubled their lead as sophomore Patrick Hanes (Raleigh, NC) scored with 6:15 left in the quarter. Randolph-Macon responded, scoring two unanswered to tie the game at three going into the second quarter.

H-SC opened the scoring in the second quarter, as White weaved between two defenders and fired a sidearm shot around a defender to take the lead back. Burke pushed the lead back to two, as he finished off the pass from O'Brien. Less than a minute after a goal by the Yellow Jackets, O'Brien scored his second, finishing off another feed from Leone to make it 6-4 in favor of the Tigers. Randolph-Macon responded, closing the quarter on the three-goal run to give them a 7-6 lead going into halftime.

The Tigers started the second half, tying the game on the third Leone to O'Brien connection just 36 seconds into the game, and took the lead on the ensuing face-off as sophomore Luke Popow (Holly Springs, NC) took it the distance for the goal. Leone got his first goal of the day, scoring on the man advantage to push the lead up to two. Junior Gaines Weis (Richmond) made it four unanswered goals for the Tigers, finishing off the pass from Burke to make it 10-7 going into the final 15 minutes.

Scoring was sparse in the fourth quarter, with the only goal coming with 46 seconds left, as O'Brien finished off the pass from Hanes to seal an 11-7 victory over the Yellow Jackets.

O'Brien led all scorers with four goals and added an assist. Leone led the game with three assists and added a goal. White scored two goals, while Hanes and Burke each had a goal and an assist. Popow and Weis each scored a goal in the game, with Weis grabbing three ground balls and causing three turnovers. Senior Thomas Harry (Troy) caused four turnovers and grabbed five ground balls, and sophomore Tyler Steele (Pinehurst, NC) had four ground balls and four turnovers.

Senior Peter Smith (Warrenton) got his ninth win in net, making 11 saves on 18 shots on target.

The Tigers will stay on the road for another ODAC clash when they travel to Averett University on Wednesday, March 27. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
