FERRUM, Va. -- Sophomore
Jack Wilson (Petersburg) went five for seven with five RBIs between both games, and junior
Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) went four for 10 with one RBI, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader with Ferrum College, losing the opener 9-4 and dropping the nightcap 7-5, Saturday night at Panther Field.
H-SC scored four runs on 11 hits with no errors in game one … scoring one run in the sixth and eighth innings, and two runs in the ninth inning. FC scored nine runs on nine hits with one error … one run in the second, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, and five runs in the seventh inning.
In the sixth, Wilson (2-3 RBI) doubled down the left field line to open the inning and moved to third on a bunt single by junior
Grayson Harris (Moseley) (2-5). Sophomore
Matthew Arnold (Danville) (1-4 RBI) singled through the right side to knock home Wilson and cut the Panther lead to 3-1.
In the eighth, Masterson (2-5) singled through the left side and moved to second on a walk by Arnold. Masterson advanced to third on a double play and then scored on a single to left center by senior
Tillman Butler (Culpeper) (1-2 RBI), to cut the lead to 9-2.
In the ninth, junior
Jahiem Green (Stafford) (1-1) singled to right center and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore
Hunter Powell (Ridgeway) (1-1) singled to center field and moved Green to third. Wilson brought home Green with an infield single to the pitcher and moved Powell to second. Powell advanced to third on a double play and scored on a single to left center by Masterson, but unfortunately, that was all the Tigers could score as they fell 9-4.
Sophomore
Sterling Austin (Petersburg) (0-2) started 5.2 innings for the Tigers, allowing 6 hits and four runs, four earned, with three strikeouts, three walks, and one hit batter in the losing effort. Junior
Gavin Gregory (Suffolk) tossed 1.0 inning, yielding two hits, five runs, five earned, with no strikeouts, one walk, and two hit batters. Senior
Jack Bourdon (Madison) pitched 1.1 innings, allowing one hit, and no runs, with two strikeouts and one walk.
H-SC scored five runs on nine hits with two errors in game two … scoring two runs in the second inning and three runs in the seventh. FC scored seven runs on 10 hits with two errors … scoring two runs in the third inning and five runs in the fifth inning.
In the second, junior
Christian Lancaster (Danville) (1-4) reached on an error and moved to second on a walk by freshman
Trey Shrock (Appomattox) (1-3). Lancaster and Shrock moved to third and second on a walk by freshman
Jase Howell (Portsmouth) and came home to score on a two-RBI single to center by Wilson (3-4 2 RBIs) to give H-SC an early 2-0 lead.
In the seventh, freshman
Jake Moore (Dry Fork) (1-3) reached on an error and moved to second on a single to left field by Shrock. Green pinch hit and drew a walk to load the bases. Wilson singled through the left side, moving Green to second and bringing home Moore and Shrock. After Green was thrown out at third on a fielder's choice, Arnold (1-4 RBI) singled down the right field line to drive home Wilson and cut the Ferrum lead to 7-5. Unfortunately, the Tigers did not score again and fell 7-5.
Sophomore
Jake Williams (Chesapeake) started and pitched 4.0 innings for the Tigers, allowing four hits, two runs, and two earned, with six strikeouts, and one walk. Howell (1-1) pitched 0.2 innings, allowing five hits, five runs, and three earned, with no strikeouts, and no walks, taking the loss in the game. Junior
Justin Reynolds (Virginia Beach) pitched 1.1 innings giving up no hits, and no runs, while striking out none, and giving up one walk. Sophomore
Colton Harris (Stuarts Draft) pitched 1.0 inning, giving up no hits, no runs, and none earned, with one strikeout and one walk. Sophomore
Alex Fitz-Hugh (Chesterfield) pitched the final 1.0 inning, giving up one hit, and no runs, with two strikeouts, and no walks.
H-SC will travel for an ODAC game on Wednesday, March 20, beginning at 3:30 p.m. against Randolph-Macon College. It will return home to Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium, on Thursday, March 21, to play a non-conference game against Mary Baldwin University at 3:30 p.m.
