Matthew Arnold (Danville) had three hits and four RBIs in the second game, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped both games of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader to nationally-ranked No. 1 Shenandoah University on Sunday afternoon on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Alex Fitz-Hugh (Chesterfield) took the pitching setback in the 10-8 opener, while freshman
Alex Caruso (Appomattox) took the mound loss in the 20-15 nightcap for the host Tigers (4-6, 1-3 ODAC) against the visiting and top-ranked Hornets (12-1, 2-0 ODAC).
In game one, H-SC scored eight runs on 13 hits with one error … scoring two runs in the first inning, one run in the fifth, and five runs in the seventh. SU scored 10 runs on 13 hits with no errors … scoring two runs each in the first, second and third innings, one run in the fifth, and the three decisive runs in the ninth.
Harris (3-5, RBI) and Shrock (3-5, RBI) each collected three hits for the Tigers in the opener, while Lancaster (2-4, 2 RBIs) and sophomore
Jack Wilson (Petersburg) (2-4, RBI) each slammed home runs—Lancaster's a two-run blast in the first and Wilson's a solo shot in the fifth—his second of the season which leads the team. Wilson had a double, as well, as did Arnold (2-5) among his two hits.

Sterling Austin (Petersburg) started and pitched the first 3.2 innings for the Garnet & Grey, allowing 10 hits and six runs, all earned, with three strikeouts and one walk. Classmate
Jake Williams (Chesapeake) was the most effective among four pitchers out of the bullpen, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings and yielding one hit with four strikeouts and one walk. Fitz-Hugh (0-1) took the loss with 1.0-inning plus, allowing one hit and three runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and four walks.
In game two, H-SC scored 15 runs on 17 hits with three errors … scoring seven runs in the first inning, four runs in the third, three runs in the fifth, and one run in the eighth. SU scored 20 runs on 17 hits with two errors … scoring three runs in the second inning, four runs in the third, seven runs in the fifth, one run in the sixth, four runs in the eighth and one run in the ninth.

Caruso (0-1) was among five relief pitchers and took the loss with 2.1 innings, allowing six hits and five runs, four earned, with three strikeouts and one walk.
H-SC will remain at home to play non-conference opponent Hamilton (NY) College on Monday, March 11, beginning at 12 p.m. at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium.
