Hampden-Sydney Splits Doubleheader Against Hamilton (NY); Winning Nightcap 14-11 After Dropping Opener 9-1

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Senior Tillman Butler (Culpeper) went two for four with two RBIs and two runs scored, and junior Christian Chambers (Midlothian) went one for two with two RBIs and two runs scored, as Hampden-Sydney College split a non-conference doubleheader with Hamilton (NY) College, losing the opener 9-1 and taking a victory in the nightcap 14-11, Sunday afternoon on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium.

H-SC scored one run on seven hits with one error in game one … scoring one run in the fifth inning. HC scored 9 runs on 10 hits with one error … scoring four runs in the second inning, one run in the third inning, and two runs in the fourth and sixth innings.

In the fifth, freshman Noah Leonard (Troutville) (1-3) singled to the left field and advanced to second on a ground out by senior Julian Franks-Pollock (Virginia Beach) (1-4). Leonard advanced to third on an errant pick-off throw by the pitcher and junior Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) (1 RBI) drove him in with a sacrifice fly to center field, cutting the lead to 7-1. Unfortunately, the Tigers did not score any more runs, falling 9-1 in game one.

Freshman Ty Herndon (Richmond) (0-1) started 1.2 innings for the Tigers, allowing four hits and four runs, four earned, with three strikeouts, and four walks. Junior Dylan Robbins (Mechanicsville) tossed 1.1 innings, yielding three hits and three runs, three earned, with no strikeouts, one walk, and two hit batters. Sophomore Kyle Woodall (Mechanicsville) pitched 2.0 innings, allowing two hits, two runs, two earned, with two strikeouts, two walks, and one hit batter. Freshman Logan Benton (North Chesterfield), was the final pitcher for the Tigers in the first game, pitching two innings, giving up one hit, no runs, and none earned, with one strikeout, and no walks.

H-SC scored 14 runs on 10 hits with no errors in game two … scoring two runs in the first inning, three runs in the second inning, two runs in the third inning, six runs in the fifth inning, and one run in the sixth inning. HC scored 11 runs on nine hits with three errors … scoring three runs in the second inning, five runs in the third inning, one run in the fifth inning, and two runs in the sixth inning.

In the first, junior Jahiem Green (Stafford) (1-2 1 RBI) reached on a single to second base, before stealing both second and third and scoring on a throwing error when stealing third. Junior Christian Chambers (Midlothian) (1-2 2 RBIs) walked and advanced to third on a double by freshman Jase Howell (Portsmouth) (2-5 1 RBI). Junior Johnny Oates II (Chester) walked and Chambers came home to score as sophomore Hunter Powell (Ridgeway) reached on an error as H-SC jumped out to an early 2-0 lead.

In the second, sophomore Chase Sanford (Mechanicsville) (1-2 1 RBI) reached on a hit by pitch and then proceeded to steal second and third. Green reached on a walk and stole second to put runners at second and third. Chambers grounded out to shortstop but drove in Chambers and moved Green over to third. Butler (2-4 2 RBIs) singled to third and moved to second on a single to right field by Howell that drove in Green. Butler stole third and then scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-3 Tigers.

In the third, Powell and sophomore Turner Fitzpatrick (Richmond) both walked and Powell stole third to get runners on first and third. Fitzpatrick stole second and the ball got away from the catcher for Powell to score. Green and Chambers walked to load the bases, then Butler also walked to drive in Fitzpatrick to cut the Hamilton lead to 8-7.

In the fifth, sophomore Jack Wilson (Petersburg) (1 RBI) reached second on an error and came home to score on a single by Chambers. Butler doubled home Chambers and then advanced to third on a ground out to second by Howell. Sophomore Aidan Conway (Chesapeake) (1-1 1 RBI) came up big with a pinch-hit single to drive in Butler before being pinch-run for by Franks-Pollock. Powell singled and moved to second after Franks-Pollock stole third. Fitzpatrick walked to load the bases and Powell and Franks-Pollock came home to score on back-to-back walks by Sanford and Green. Wilson drove home Fitzpatrick with a sacrifice fly to left field to make it 13-9 in favor of the Tigers.

In the sixth inning, freshman Brandon Shelhorse (Fairfax) (1-1 1 RBI) put an exclamation point on the game by blasting a solo home run to left field to give H-SC a 14-11 win.

Sophomore Jackson Barnett (Ashland) started and pitched 2.2 innings for the Tigers, allowing five hits, seven runs, and seven earned, with one strikeout, one walk, and two hit batters. Sophomore Colton Harris (Stuarts Draft) pitched 1.2 innings, allowing two hits, two runs, and two earned, with one strikeout, one walk, and two hit batters. Senior Jack Bourdon (Madison) (1-0) pitched 0.2 innings giving up no hits, and no runs, while striking out none, and giving up no walks to get the win. Freshman Alex Caruso (Appomattox) pitched 0.1 innings, giving up one hit, two runs, and two earned, with one strikeout and two walks. Senior Ryan Portes (Midlothian) pitched 0.2 innings, giving up one hit, no runs, with no strikeouts, and no walks. Sophomore Alex Fitz-Hugh (Chesterfield) (2 Saves) pitched the final inning for the Tigers and got the save, pitching one inning, giving up no hits, and no runs, with one strikeout, and no walks.

H-SC will travel for a non-conference game on Tuesday, March 12, beginning at 3 p.m. against Southern Virginia University. It will stay on the road for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader on Saturday, March 16, with the first game beginning at 2 p.m. against Ferrum College.
