No. 3 Hampden-Sydney Plays At Averett On Wednesday Night At 7 p.m.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College, ranked No. 3 this week in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, plays on the road for the first time in 18 days at Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) member Averett University on Wednesday night, February 7, at 7 p.m. in Danville. NCAA Division III's third-ranked Tigers are 19-2 overall, including 11-2 in the ODAC, following a disappointing 48-46 ODAC home setback to No. 8 Randolph-Macon College on Feb. 3 in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium at Kirby Field House that halted a 14-game winning streak—the Garnet & Grey last played on the road January 20 at Shenandoah, a 69-52 road win. The Cougars are 4-18 overall, 2-11 in the ODAC, after a 61-44 ODAC road loss at Washington and Lee University on Feb. 3. The contest will be available to watch via the Averett Sports Network.

Head Coach Caleb Kimbrough
H-SC is led by the fifth-year head coach who took over the program on April 4, 2019. The former head coach at Huntingdon (AL) College from 2016-19, Kimbrough is the 19th head coach in the 114-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. He is no stranger to the ODAC, having played four years at Guilford (NC) College and coached six years with the Quakers, and one year at Washington and Lee University. Kimbrough is 71-37 overall at the College, including 42-23 in ODAC games. Caleb was both the 2022-23 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division III District 6 Coach of the Year, and the ODAC Men's Basketball Bob Johnson Coach of the Year.

Scouting No. 1 Hampden-Sydney
H-SC is extremely balanced offensively with three players averaging in double-figure scoring among its five starters that are each scoring at least 6.3 points per game, while seven Tigers are playing nearly 15 minutes among 11 playing eight-plus minutes per game. H-SC has been led by senior forward Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) with his 15.4 points (34 3FGs) and 7.8 rebounds, senior guard and team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) with his 12.4 points (42 3FGs) and 3.8 assists, along with fifth-year guard Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA) with his 11.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.7 steals. Joining them in the lineup have been senior guard Alex Elliott (Marietta, GA) (6.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 19 3FGs) and senior guard/forward and team captain Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) (6.5 points, 3.9 rebounds). Fifth-year guard Chase Turner (Virginia Beach) (4.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists), fifth-year forward and team captain Miles Harris (Virginia Beach) (3.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, 19 3FGs) and sophomore forward Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) (3.6 points) have provided solid depth. The Tigers are shooting 46% (584-1283) from the field, including 38% (170-452) on three-point field goals (8.1 per game), and 73% (212-290) at the free throw line. H-SC has averaged 73.8 points, and allowed only 58.1 points, for a +15.7 scoring margin.

Scouting Averett
The Cougars are coached by 10th-year head coach David Doino. AU has been led by senior guard Jordan Lewis with his 11.9 points (20 3FGs), 4.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists, freshman guard Jamison Graves with his 10.2 points (17 3FGs) and senior forward Jason Sellars II with his 10.1 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.3 blocks. The Cougars shoot 39% (470-1201) from the field, including 31% (108-348) on three-pointers (4.9 per game), and 65% (231-355) at the line; scoring only 58.1 points, and yielding 68.4 points, for a -10.3 scoring margin.

Series History
H-SC and AU are playing for the 31st time overall since first playing on Nov. 24, 1978. The Tigers lead the overall series at 19-11, including an 88-60 home win on Nov. 29 in Fleet Gym. H-SC has won four of the last five games played between the two schools, and own three consecutive wins in Danville, as well.

Last Meeting (11/29/23)
Alex Elliott scored a season-high 16 points, Ryan Clements added 14 points and Shane Fernald came off the bench for career-highs of 13 points and eight rebounds, to lead nationally-ranked No. 2 H-SC to an 88-60 ODAC home win past AU Fleet Gym. The Tigers led 39-26 at halftime and by as many as 32 points in the second half against the visiting Cougars, who were led by Jordan Lewis with a game-high 20 points.

H-SC is ranked No. 3 nationally this week in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25. The Tigers dropped two spots from the No. 1 ranking that they had maintained for the past five weeks, and earned 574 points in this week's poll, including three first-place votes—John Carroll (OH) (20-1) is ranked No. 1 with 598 points and 12 first-place votes. H-SC won at JCU 85-67 on December 19 in University Heights, Ohio.

NCAA Division III Statistics
H-SC currently ranks seventh nationally in scoring defense (58.1), eighth in scoring margin (15.7), ninth in winning percentage (.905), 13th in field goal percentage defense (38.0), 16th in assist/turnover ratio (1.44), 24th in both three-point percentage (37.6) and in rebound margin (7.4), 33rd in fewest turnovers (11.0) and 37th in turnover margin (3.6). Adam Brazil ranks 20th in NCAA Division III assist/turnover ratio (2.76).

Bevo Francis Award Top 100 Watch List
Davidson Hubbard was named to the 2023-24 Bevo Francis Award Top 100 Watch List on Jan. 15. The Clarence "Bevo" Francis Award is presented annually to the player who has had the finest overall season within Small College Basketball to include NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA, USCAA and NCCAA.

The Team Three-Point Stat
H-SC has made at least one three-point field goal in 481 consecutive games, dating back to a home game vs. Emory & Henry on Dec. 3, 2005 (0-1 3FGA). Ironically, the Tigers won that contest 130-99. H-SC's 142 three-pointers this season includes three games of at least 11, with a season-high 17 three-pointers vs. Rose-Hulman (IN) on Nov. 18 (17-36 3FGA). The season-low is four at Ferrum on Jan. 3 (4-22 3FGA).

Career Watch
Ryan Clements ranks 12th in career scoring with 1,342 career points in 108 career games. ***Davidson Hubbard*** ranks 45th with 1,003 career points in 79 career games. He surpassed the career scoring milestone on a massive offensive rebound and two-handed slam dunk follow-up against Randolph-Macon on Feb. 3 in Fleet Gym. Russell Turner '92 is the all-time leader with 2,272 career points. Clements is seventh in career steals with 177 career steals. Ralph Baker '89 is the all-time leader with 258 career steals. Hubbard is 10th in career blocks with 48 career blocks. Mike Thompson '04 is the all-time leader with 136 career blocks.

2023-24 Team Captains
Leading the Tigers are fifth-year Miles Harris, along with seniors Adam Brazil and Josiah Hardy. Harris and Brazil are each serving in the leadership role for their second season, while Hardy is a first-year captain. Miles is the son of Randy Harris and Corey Bacs and is majoring in economics and business. Adam is the son of Mark and Kristen Brazil and is majoring in English. Josiah is the son of Vernal Hardy and Felicia Miller and is majoring in economics and business.

Program History
H-SC is competing in its 114th-year of basketball during 2023-24. The Tigers began this season with an overall record of 1486-1093 since beginning in 1908, and currently are 1505-1095. H-SC has posted 63 winning seasons (this season included), 15 seasons with at least 20 wins, and has won 10 ODAC Tournament Championships and made 15 NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. The Tigers have advanced to the Final Four two times previously, and to the National Championship once.
 
Three Former Tigers Are Division I Head Coaches
H-SC currently has three former basketball team members and graduates of the College that are serving as NCAA Division I head coaches. Russell Turner '92 is in his 14th year at UC Irvine ... Ryan Odom '96 is in his first season at VCU and his eighth season as a DI head coach (UMBC, Utah State) ... Griff Aldrich '96 is in his sixth year at Longwood. Entering this season, Turner was 265-170 at UCI ... Odom was 141-85 overall, including 44-25 in two years at USU and 97-60 in five years at UMBC ... Aldrich was 88-72 at Longwood.
