No. 1 Hampden-Sydney Welcomes La Roche (PA) In First Round Of NCAA Tournament On Friday At 7 p.m.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College, ranked No. 1 in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, welcomes La Roche (PA) University in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship on Friday night, March 1, at 7 p.m. in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium at Kirby Field House. Division III's top-ranked Tigers are 26-2 overall following an 81-56 win past #4 seed Washington and Lee University in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament Championship on February 25 at the Salem Civic Center in Salem. The Redhawks are 17-10 overall after an 80-69 home win past Penn State-Behrend in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Tournament Championship on Feb. 24 in Pittsburgh. The contest can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM, and will also be available worldwide on the Internet at wvhl.net or via the TuneIn Radio App, while available to watch on the Tiger Sports Network.

Hampden-Sydney Is A Host Site
H-SC was chosen as one of sixteen sites hosting competition on Friday and Saturday, March 1-2. Stevens Institute of Technology (NJ) (22-5) will play Farmingdale State (NY) College (26-2) in the first game on Friday, March 1, at 4:30 p.m. The two winners of the Friday games will play in the second round on Saturday, March 2, at 7 p.m.—all three games in Fleet Gym.

Head Coach Caleb Kimbrough
H-SC is led by the fifth-year head coach who took over the program on April 4, 2019. The former head coach at Huntingdon (AL) College from 2016-19, Kimbrough is the 19th head coach in the 114-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. He is no stranger to the ODAC, having played four years at Guilford (NC) College and coached six years with the Quakers, and one year at Washington and Lee. Kimbrough is 78-37 overall at the College, including 45-23 in ODAC games. Caleb was both the 2022-23 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division III District 6 Coach of the Year, and the ODAC Men's Basketball Bob Johnson Coach of the Year.

Scouting No. 1 Hampden-Sydney
H-SC won its record-11th ODAC Tournament title with the win past W&L, while playing in its record-16th ODAC championship game. The Tigers have seven-straight wins and 21 wins in their last 22 games overall. The Garnet & Grey are enjoying their finest season in 21 years, when the program was also 26-2 through 28 games in 2002-03. The 26 overall wins equal the fourth-most all-time and are the most under Coach Kimbrough. In addition, H-SC has attained its 17th 20-win season in program history, and second consecutive 20-win campaign, marking the first time since 2002-03 (28-4) and 2003-04 (25-5) with back-to-back 20-win seasons.

The Tigers are extremely balanced offensively with three players averaging in double-figure scoring among its five starters that are each scoring at least 6.1 points per game, while seven Tigers are playing nearly 15 minutes among 10 playing eight-plus minutes per game. H-SC has been led by its All-ODAC trio of senior forward Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) with his 15.2 points (42 3FGs) and 7.4 rebounds, senior guard, team captain and ODAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) with his 13.3 points (64 3FGs) and 3.7 assists, along with fifth-year guard Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA) with his 10.8 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.8 steals. Joining them in the lineup have been senior guard/forward and team captain Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) (6.8 points, 3.9 rebounds) and senior guard Alex Elliott (Marietta, GA) (6.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, 25 3FGs). Fifth-year guard Chase Turner (Virginia Beach) (4.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists), fifth-year forward and team captain Miles Harris (Virginia Beach) (4.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, 28 3FGs) and sophomore forward Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) (4.0 points) have provided solid depth.

H-SC is shooting 46% (779-1696) from the field, including 37% (226-607) on three-point field goals (8.1 per game), and 74% (291-396) at the free throw line. The Tigers have averaged 74.1 points, and allowed only 57.7 points, for a +16.4 scoring margin.

Scouting La Roche (PA)
The Redhawks are coached by 12th-year head coach Hermie Carmichael, and have won back-to-back AMCC Tournament titles. La Roche has been led by junior guard Joe Starzynski (14.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 24 3FGs), freshman guard Bryce Epps (12.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, 62 3FGs) and junior guard Michael Brooks (11.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, 34 3FGs). The Redhawks shoot 43% (738-1703) from the field, including 33% (224-674) on three-pointers (8.3 per game), and 72% (321-445) at the line; scoring 74.9 points, and yielding 72.1 points, for a +2.8 scoring margin.

2024 ODAC Tournament Honors
Adam Brazil was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2024 ODAC Tournament after averaging 17.3 points (9 3FGs), 6.0 rebounds and 4.3 assists in three games. He was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Davidson Hubbard (18.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, 7 3FGs, 5 blocks) and Josiah Hardy (11.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, 64% FGs).

2023-24 All-ODAC Honors
Davidson Hubbard and Adam Brazil were each named First Team All-ODAC, while Ryan Clements was named Third Team All-ODAC, as announced on Feb. 21. Clements has been named All-ODAC for the third time—also Third Team in 2022-23 and Second Team in 2021-22, while Hubbard and Brazil have been named All-ODAC for the second time—Hubbard was also First Team in 2022-23, and Brazil was Second Team last year.

2023-24 ODAC Scholar-Athlete Award
Adam Brazil garnered ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors from the league's athletic communications personnel. Adam is an English major and Dean's List student with a 3.81 GPA, while a three-time member of the ODAC All-Academic Team (2021-23).

100 Collegiate Coaching Wins
Caleb Kimbrough won his 100th game as a collegiate head coach with a 71-47 road win at VWU on Feb. 14. Coach Kimbrough is currently 104-77 in eight years, including 78-37 in five years at H-SC..

NCAA Top 16 / Region VI Rankings
H-SC was ranked first among the NCAA Division III Top 16, announced on Feb. 15. The Tigers remained first in Region VI of the NCAA Regional Rankings, as well, as released on Feb. 26 following Selection Monday.

H-SC currently ranks second nationally in winning percentage (.929), fifth in both scoring defense (57.7) and scoring margin (16.4), 11th in assist/turnover ratio (1.49), 17th in field goal percentage defense (38.2), 19th in rebound margin (7.6), 20th in fewest turnovers (10.4), 24th in turnover margin (3.9) and 30th in three-point percentage (37.2). Adam Brazil ranks 10th in NCAA Division III assist/turnover ratio (3.06).

H-SC was a unanimous No. 1 in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 released on Feb. 26, earning all 25 first-place votes and 625 points in this week's poll. It marks the second consecutive and seventh week this season at No. 1, while the Tigers have now been ranked among the top five nationally for 10 of 12 weeks during 2023-24. H-SC has wins this season past No. 2 John Carroll (OH), No. 4 Randolph-Macon, No. 16 Widener and No. 23 Christopher Newport.

It's A Team Game: So Unselfish
H-SC has had seven different student-athletes lead the team in scoring this season ... seven different team members lead the squad in rebounding ... and six different players lead the team in assists. The Tigers have been led in scoring at times by Davidson Hubbard (11), Adam Brazil (9), Ryan Clements (5), Alex Elliott (1), Miles Harris (1) and Ayman McGowan (1). The Garnet & Grey have been led in rebounding at times by Hubbard (19), Clements (4), Elliott (3), Harris (2), Josiah Hardy (2), Chase Turner (2) and Shane Fernald (1). H-SC has been led in assists at times by Brazil (14), Clements (13), Turner (5), Elliott (1), Fernald (1) and DJ Wright (1).

The Team Three-Point Stat
H-SC has made at least one three-point field goal in 488 consecutive games, dating back to a home game vs. Emory & Henry on Dec. 3, 2005 (0-1 3FGA). Ironically, the Tigers won that high-scoring contest 130-99. H-SC made a season-high 17 three-pointers vs. Rose-Hulman (IN) on Nov. 18 (17-36 3FGA), one of four games this season with 10-plus three-pointers.

Career Watch
Ryan Clements ranks 11th in career scoring at H-SC with 1,400 career points in 115 career games. Davidson Hubbard ranks 36th with 1,106 career points in 86 career games. Adam Brazil is approaching the 1,000-point milestone, currently with 982 career points in 87 career games. Russell Turner '92 is the all-time leader with 2,272 career points. Clements ranks fourth in career steals with 195. Ralph Baker '89 is the all-time leader with 258 career steals. Clements ranks sixth in career assists with 353. Mike Murray '15 is the all-time leader with 433 career assists. Hubbard ranks eighth in career blocks with 54. Miles Harris ranks 14th in career blocks with 42. Mike Thompson '04 is the all-time leader with 136 career blocks.

Program History
H-SC is competing in its 114th-year of basketball during 2023-24. The Tigers began this season with an overall record of 1486-1093 since beginning in 1908, and currently are 1512-1095. H-SC has posted 63 winning seasons (this season included), 17 seasons with at least 20 wins (this season included), and has now won a record 11 ODAC Tournament Championships and is making its 16th NCAA Division III Tournament appearance. The Tigers have advanced to the Final Four two times previously, and to the National Championship once.

NCAA Tournament History
H-SC is making its 16th overall NCAA Tournament appearance since 1989, winning at least one game in 12 of the previous 15 years, while compiling an NCAA Tournament record of 20-16. The Tigers were National Runners-Up in 1999, falling to UW-Platteville 76-75 in double-overtime in the National Championship contest, and the Garnet & Grey advanced to the Final Four in 2003, falling to Gustavus Adolphus (MN) 79-68 in the National Semifinals, before falling to Wooster (OH) 78-74 in the third-place game. H-SC advanced to the Elite Eight in 1995, while reaching the Sweet 16 in 1992 and 1994. The Tigers have hosted 18 NCAA Tournament games since 1992, compiling an impressive 13-5 record in those postseason home games.
