HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Senior
Ford Burke (Richmond) scored five goals and fellow classmate
Michael Leone (Vienna) scored three goals to go along with two assists to help lead Hampden-Sydney College to its first win in the final meeting with Cabrini (PA) University, 11-10, Tuesday night at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
"We're excited for our team for grinding tonight and picking up an important win for our season," said head coach
Jason Rostan '03. "It was not always pretty, but our team found a way in a hard-fought game. We have a lot of respect for Cabrini lacrosse, their coaches, and their student-athletes' commitment in their final season. We have had a lot of awesome games over the past 17 years and we will miss competing with their great program."
H-SC got the scoring started in the first quarter, following a save by senior goalie
Peter Smith (Warrenton) the ball was fired up field to junior
Conor Kilfeather (Wyndmoor, PA) who dumped it off to Leone to find Burke flashing in front of goal to open the scoring. Cabrini answered, scoring two unanswered to take a slim 2-1 lead into the second quarter.
Burke opened the scoring for the second straight quarter, receiving the short pass from senior
Ray O'Brien (Scituate, MA) and making a move to get around the defender and fire the left-handed shot over the head of the goalie. 20 seconds after Cabrini scored a man-up goal to take the lead back, sophomore
Patrick Hanes (Raleigh, NC) got his name on the scoresheet, beating his man on the left side and coming over the top to finish home the goal. Cabrini answered once again to get the game to 4-3 before O'Brien took care of things himself, weaving in between two men and beating the goalie as he was being pushed to the ground to even the game going into halftime at 4-4.
It took less than a minute after halftime for the Tigers to take the lead, as junior
Campion White (Apex, NC) found Leone cutting towards the net for the finish past a leaping goalie. Leone made it two straight for himself to start the third quarter, as on the man advantage he got the ball from senior
Patrick Saunders (Alexandria) and was tripped on a spin move going to the net but was somehow able to finish after he hit the turf. Cabrini answered with a goal with 4:31 remaining to make it 6-5 after 45 minutes of action.
After getting 11 total goals between the sides through 45 minutes of action, the final 15 minutes provided a lot more offense, to the tune of 10 goals between the two sides. H-SC started the quarter with a two-goal run, both coming off the stick of Burke. The first came after Burke took the ball inbounds after a shot went out of bounds, and immediately beat his man and finished a left-handed shot at an impossible angle. Just over a minute later was his second, burying the shot after making a move around a defender upon receiving the pass from O'Brien to push the lead to 8-5. The sides traded the next two goals, with Cabrini cutting the lead to two, and then just over three minutes later with the shot clock at 10, Leone uncorked a shot from the left side beating the goalie at the near post. Cabrini followed that up a minute later by going on a two goal run over the 18 seconds to make it 9-8 Tigers. Three seconds later, the Tigers pushed the lead back to two, as sophomore
Evan Yntema (Summerfield, NC) took the face-off the distance, bouncing a shot from distance inside the right post for the goal. Just over a minute later, the lead was back to three, as Leone made a cross-crease pass to a wide-open Burke who bounced it passed a chasing goalie to make it 11-8 with 6:08 to play. The Cavaliers answered, scoring two goals and getting the lead down to one with 22 seconds remaining, and a face-off win by Yntema helped secure an 11-10 win for H-SC.
Burke was the leading scorer with five and Leone added three goals and two assists. O'Brien scored one goal and tallied two assists. Hanes scored one along with Yntema who also went 13-23 on face-offs. White and Saunders each had one assist apiece. Kilfeather grabbed seven ground balls and caused three turnovers on the night. Senior
Thomas Harry (Charlottesville) caused two turnovers and grabbed four ground balls and sophomore
Tyler Steele (Pinehurst, NC) grabbed two ground balls and caused two turnovers.
Smith got his fourth win of the season in net, making 15 saves on 25 shots on target.
