Matthew Arnold (Danville) had two hits and three RBIs, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to its first win of the season with a 9-2 non-conference baseball victory past Bates (ME) College on Friday afternoon on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Freshman
Trey Shrock (Appomattox) added two hits and an RBI, as well, while freshman
Jase Howell (Portsmouth) gained the pitching triumph for the host Tigers (1-3) against the visiting Bobcats (1-1).
H-SC scored nine runs on 11 hits with no errors … scoring four runs in the fourth inning, three runs in the seventh and two runs in the eighth inning. BC scored two runs on seven hits with two errors … scoring one run each in the first and third innings.
In the fourth, Shrock (2-4, RBI) reached on a bunt single to third, stole second base and scored on a ground-rule double by junior
Christian Chambers (Midlothian) (1-3, RBI). Chambers then stole third base ahead of a walk to sophomore
Jack Wilson (Petersburg) (1-2), and scored when Harris (3-5, RBI) singled through the left side. A walk to
junior
Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) (1-4) loaded the bases, before Wilson and Harris scored when Arnold singled through the left side, as well, for a 4-2 advantage.
In the seventh, Arnold and junior team captain
Christian Lancaster (Danville) (RBI) each drew walks and then advanced a base each on a sacrifice bunt by junior team captain
Johnny Oates II (Chester). Arnold scored courtesy of a wild pitch, before Lancaster scored via a triple to right field by sophomore
Jacob Miller-Bopp (Barhamsville) (1-2, RBI). Junior
Jahiem Green (Stafford) pinch-ran for Miller-Bopp and scored on a ground ball out off the bat of Shrock to provide for a 7-2 lead.
In the eighth, Wilson and Harris each singled, and the bases were loaded again after Masterson reached on an error. Wilson scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Arnold, and Harris scored on a ground ball out off the bat of Lancaster for the final 9-2 margin.
Sophomore
Sterling Austin (Petersburg) started and pitched the first 4.0 innings for the Tigers, scattering six hits and two runs, both earned, with three strikeouts and one walk. Howell (1-0) tossed 2.2 scoreless innings for his first collegiate mound win, yielding no hits with one strikeout and two walks. Senior
Jack Bourdon (Madison) pitched one-third of an inning, allowing no hits with no strikeouts and no walks, while freshmen
Ty Herndon (Richmond) and
Logan Benton (North Chesterfield) each tossed a scoreless inning, as well, Herndon yielding no hits with two strikeouts and one walk … and Benton one hit with no strikeouts and one walk.
H-SC will remain home at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium to play non-conference opponent St. Mary's (MD) College on Sunday, February 25, in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
