Hampden-Sydney Sweeps Past Visiting St. Mary's (MD) 15-1, 9-3

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Junior Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) had four hits and four RBIs, junior Grayson Harris (Moseley) went a perfect three of three at the plate with one RBI, and, senior Tillman Butler (Culpeper) had two hits and three RBIs, as Hampden-Sydney College grabbed a 15-1, 9-3 doubleheader sweep of St. Mary's (MD) College on Sunday afternoon on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Junior Justin Reynolds (Virginia Beach) took the win on the mound in game one for the host Tigers (3-3) against the visiting Seahawks (1-2) throwing six innings, giving up two hits and one earned run while striking out six. Freshman Adam Emhoff (Chesapeake) earned his first career win in game two for the Tigers, throwing five innings, giving up six hits and two earned runs while striking out nine.

H-SC scored 15 on 12 hits with no errors in game one … scoring five runs in the first inning, two runs each in the second, third, and fourth innings, three runs in the fifth inning, and one run in the sixth inning. SMC scored one run on three hits with three errors … scoring one run in the sixth inning.

In the first, Harris (3-3) singled through the middle, sophomore Matthew Arnold (Danville) reached on an error, and junior Christian Chambers (Midlothian) (1-2) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Harris scored when sophomore Jacob Miller-Bopp (Barhamsville) (RBI) drew a walk, Masterson, Arnold and Miller-Bopp scored on a bases-clearing triple to right field by Butler (2-3 3 RBIs). Senior Lucas Burnette (Hurt) (RBI) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to give an early 5-0 lead to the Tigers.

In the second, sophomore Jack Wilson (Petersburg) drew a walk and advanced to third on a single to right field by Harris. Masterson drove in Wilson with a sacrifice fly and Harris advanced from first to third as Arnold reached safely on an error. This set up junior team captain Christian Lancaster (Danville) (RBI) to hit a sacrifice fly to left field to push the lead to 7-0.

In the third, Chambers doubled down the first base line and Wilson walked with two outs. Harris singled to right center field to score Chambers and move Wilson to third, and the next at-bat Masterson drove home Wilson with a single up to the middle to make it 9-0 after three.

In the fourth, junior Jahiem Green (Stafford) hit an infield single, then advanced to second on a passed ball, before stealing third and scoring on an error. Miller-Bopp walked, Butler singled down the right-field line, and Burnette walked to load the bases. Freshman Jake Moore (Dry Fork) (1-1 3 RBIs) pinch hit and lined a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Miller-Bopp to make it 11-0.

In the fifth, sophomore Greer Farr (Southern Shores, NC) (1-1) hit a pinch-hit single and was then run for by sophomore Turner Fitzpatrick (Richmond). Freshman Noah Leonard (Troutville) had a pinch-hit walk and freshman Brad Armour (Great Falls) was hit by a pitch in his pinch-hit opportunity to load the bases. Moore singled up the middle to bring home Fitzpatrick and Leonard, and senior Julian Franks-Pollock (Virginia Beach) (1-2 RBI) singled to right field to bring home Armour to give H-SC a 13-run cushion.

In the sixth, sophomore Hunter Powell (Ridgeway) (1-1) singled through the left side and freshman Jase Howell (Portsmouth) walked to put runners on first and second with no outs. Powell advanced to third on a wild pitch and was brought home on a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to left field by sophomore Brandon Adamos (Onancock) (RBI) to bring it to a 15-1 margin.
Reynolds (1-0) started and pitched the 6.0 innings for the Tigers, allowing two hits and one run, one earned, with six strikeouts and three walks. Freshman Alex Caruso (Appomattox) tossed the final inning, yielding one hit and no runs, with two strikeouts and two walks.

H-SC scored nine runs on 10 hits with no errors in game two … scoring three runs in the third inning, five runs in the fourth inning, and one run in the fifth inning. SMC scored three runs on 11 hits with two errors … scoring one run in the first, fifth, and seventh innings.

In the third, Wilson reached on an error, and freshman Trey Shrock (Appomattox) walked to get runners on first and second. Masterson singled to second base to load the bases and Arnold drove in Wilson with a bases-loaded walk. After a flyout, Miller-Bopp doubled down the third base line to bring home Masterson and Shrock and make it a 3-1 Tiger lead.

In the fourth, Moore and Wilson both singles, and Shrock walked to load the bases with no outs. Masterson drove home Moor and Wilson with a single, and Arnold moved Shrock to third with a fielder's choice. Lancaster singled home Shrock and Miller-Bopp doubled home Arnold. Miller-Bopp advanced to third on a fielder's choice by junior Johnny Oates II (Chester) to allow Miller-Bopp to score off an error off the bat of Burnette to increase the lead to 8-1

In the fifth, Wilson led the inning off with a solo home run to left center to make the lead 9-2 and eventually would end 9-3 for the Tigers.

Emhoff (1-1) started and pitched five innings for the Tigers, allowing six hits, two runs, two earned, with nine strikeouts and no walks. Sophomore Ashton Armour (Great Falls) pitched one inning, allowing one hit, no runs, with no strikeouts or walks. Junior Gavin Gregory (Suffolk) pitched the final inning for the Tigers, allowing four hits, one run, one earned, with no strikeouts or walks.

H-SC will remain home at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium for the next three games three games starting this Tuesday, February 27 against Southern Virginia University at 3 p.m., and finishing with the first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader against Washington and Lee University on Saturday, March 2, beginning at 11 a.m.
