Richmond, VA The Hampden-Sydney Rugby Football Club traveled to Richmond on Saturday to play in the second weekend of the annual Spider 7's tournament series. In round-robin pool play, the HSCRFC opened with national-championship contender Christendom in their first A-Side match of the spring. H-SC started strong against the Crusaders. The Tigers led 17-7 at the half with scores by
Jackson Cofer,
Teddy Hendrickson, and
John Gregoire before Christendom made an impressive comeback to win 22-17 on a game-ending try. In game two, the Ruggers earned a hard-fought 17-15 win over Radford with two tries by
Carson Mann and one try by
Teddy Hendrickson. Continuing in the traditional 7's tournament short-match format, H-SC then played Richmond. After taking an early lead on a great kick and chase play by
Jordan Payton, the Tigers fell to the Spiders 26-12, with an additional try by Payton. The Tigers then matched up with Division II Old Dominion, defeating the Monarchs 15-10 on the strength of two scores by
Jonathan Person and one by
Graeme Ebert. The Tigers finished 2-2 on the day with two losses to the tournament finalists. The Ruggers next match will be this Saturday at William and Mary with the A-Side match scheduled for a 12:45 pm start.
