HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College, ranked No. 2 this week in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, plays on the road at Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) member Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday evening, February 14, at 5 p.m. in Virginia Beach. NCAA Division III's second-ranked Tigers are 21-2 overall, including 13-2 in the ODAC, following a 78-68 ODAC home win past Randolph College on Feb. 10 in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium at Kirby Field House. The Marlins are 17-6 overall, 8-6 in the ODAC, after a 68-62 ODAC home upset win past No. 5 Guilford (NC) College on Feb. 10. VWU is receiving votes in this week's national poll. The final ODAC regular season contest of 2023-24 can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM, and will also be available worldwide on the Internet at wvhl.net or via the TuneIn Radio App, pregame airing at 4:30 p.m., while available to watch, as well, courtesy of VWU Athletics.

Head Coach Caleb Kimbrough
H-SC is led by the fifth-year head coach who took over the program on April 4, 2019. The former head coach at Huntingdon (AL) College from 2016-19, Kimbrough is the 19th head coach in the 114-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. He is no stranger to the ODAC, having played four years at Guilford (NC) College and coached six years with the Quakers, and one year at Washington and Lee. Kimbrough is 73-37 overall at the College, including 44-23 in ODAC games. Caleb was both the 2022-23 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division III District 6 Coach of the Year, and the ODAC Men's Basketball Bob Johnson Coach of the Year.

Scouting No. 2 Hampden-Sydney
H-SC has attained its 17th 20-win season in program history, and second consecutive 20-win campaign, marking the first time since 2002-03 (28-4) and 2003-04 (25-5) with back-to-back 20-win seasons. The Tigers are extremely balanced offensively with three players averaging in double-figure scoring among its five starters that are each scoring at least 6.1 points per game, while seven Tigers are playing 15-plus minutes among 11 playing eight-plus minutes per game. H-SC has been led by senior forward Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) with his 15.2 points (34 3FGs) and 7.6 rebounds, senior guard and team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) with his 12.5 points (46 3FGs) and 3.7 assists, along with fifth-year guard Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA) with his 11.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.8 steals. Joining them in the lineup have been senior guard Alex Elliott (Marietta, GA) (6.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, 22 3FGs) and senior guard/forward and team captain Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) (6.1 points, 3.7 rebounds). Fifth-year guard Chase Turner (Virginia Beach) (4.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists), fifth-year forward and team captain Miles Harris (Virginia Beach) (4.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, 23 3FGs) and sophomore forward Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) (4.1 points) have provided solid depth. The Tigers are shooting 46% (643-1399) from the field, including 38% (186-493) on three-point field goals (8.1 per game), and 74% (237-321) at the free throw line. H-SC has averaged 74.3 points, and allowed only 58.3 points, for a +16.0 scoring margin.

Scouting (RV)Virginia Wesleyan
The Marlins are coached by 24th-year head coach Dave Macedo, and were previously ranked as high as No. 18 nationally back on Jan. 2. VWU has been led by sophomore guard Khai Seargeant with his 12.7 points (20 3FGs) and senior guard Jordan Crump with his 9.2 points (34 3FGs). The Marlins shoot 42% (561-1343) from the field, including 32% (166-512) on three-pointers, and 69% (269-391) at the line; scoring 67.7 points, and yielding only 58.8 points, for a +8.9 scoring margin.

Series History
H-SC and VWU are playing for the 91st time  since first meeting on January 8, 1973 at H-SC. The Tigers lead the overall series at 50-40 (31-31 ODAC), including a 77-54 home win last month on Jan. 31, that followed two close wins last season: 78-69 in the ODAC Tournament Quarterfinals on Feb. 24, 2023 in Salem and 73-66 on Feb. 1, 2023 in Virginia Beach. The Marlins, however, have won 19 of the last 24 meetings, including eight-straight at home in Virginia Beach prior to last year.

Last Meeting (1/31/24)
Davidson Hubbard posted game-highs of 23 points and 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season, while freshman guard Blake Wilson (Charlottesville) added a career-high 12 points off the bench, to lead nationally-ranked No. 1 H-SC to a 77-54 ODAC home win past VWU in Fleet Gym. The host Tigers took control early and led 46-18 at halftime en route to their 14th-straight victory. The visiting Marlins were led by Miles Wallace with 12 points.

H-SC is ranked No. 2 nationally this week in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25. The Tigers moved up one spot from the No. 3 ranking last week—the Garnet & Grey have been ranked among the Top Five for eight of 10 weeks during 2023-24. H-SC earned 601 points in this week's poll, including six first-place votes, while John Carroll (OH) (22-1) remains ranked No. 1 for the second consecutive week with 609 points and 16 first-place votes.

NCAA Division III Statistics
H-SC currently ranks fifth nationally in winning percentage (.913), sixth in scoring defense (58.3), seventh in scoring margin (16.0), 14th in assist/turnover ratio (1.45), 18th in field goal percentage defense (38.3), 24th in three-point percentage (37.7), 25th in rebound margin (7.2), 27th in in turnover margin (4.0) and 31st in fewest turnovers (11.0). Adam Brazil ranks 14th in NCAA Division III assist/turnover ratio (2.97).

The Team Three-Point Stat
H-SC has made at least one three-point field goal in 483 consecutive games, dating back to a home game vs. Emory & Henry on Dec. 3, 2005 (0-1 3FGA). Ironically, the Tigers won that contest 130-99. H-SC's 142 three-pointers this season includes three games of at least 11, with a season-high 17 three-pointers vs. Rose-Hulman (IN) on Nov. 18 (17-36 3FGA). The season-low is four at Ferrum on Jan. 3 (4-22 3FGA).

Career Watch
Ryan Clements ranks 12th in career scoring at H-SC with 1,359 career points in 110 career games. Davidson Hubbard ranks 43rd with 1,029 career points in 81 career games. Russell Turner '92 is the all-time leader with 2,272 career points. Clements ranks fifth in career steals with 186. Ralph Baker '89 is the all-time leader with 258 career steals. Clements ranks seventh in career assists with 337. Mike Murray '15 is the all-time leader with 433 career assists. Hubbard ranks 10th in career blocks with 48. Mike Thompson '04 is the all-time leader with 136 career blocks.

2023-24 Team Captains
Leading the Tigers are fifth-year Miles Harris, along with seniors Adam Brazil and Josiah Hardy. Harris and Brazil are each serving in the leadership role for their second season, while Hardy is a first-year captain. Miles is the son of Randy Harris and Corey Bacs and is majoring in economics and business. Adam is the son of Mark and Kristen Brazil and is majoring in English. Josiah is the son of Vernal Hardy and Felicia Miller and is majoring in economics and business.

Program History
H-SC is competing in its 114th-year of basketball during 2023-24. The Tigers began this season with an overall record of 1486-1093 since beginning in 1908, and currently are 1507-1095. H-SC has posted 63 winning seasons (this season included), 17 seasons with at least 20 wins (this season included), and has won 10 ODAC Tournament Championships and made 15 NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. The Tigers have advanced to the Final Four two times previously, and to the National Championship once.
 
Three Former Tigers Are Division I Head Coaches
H-SC currently has three former basketball team members and graduates of the College that are serving as NCAA Division I head coaches. Russell Turner '92 is in his 14th year at UC Irvine ... Ryan Odom '96 is in his first season at VCU and his eighth season as a DI head coach (UMBC, Utah State) ... Griff Aldrich '96 is in his sixth year at Longwood. Entering this season, Turner was 265-170 at UCI ... Odom was 141-85 overall, including 44-25 in two years at USU and 97-60 in five years at UMBC ... Aldrich was 88-72 at Longwood.
