BOX SCORE

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. --
All-American fifth-year guard and third-year team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) scored a game-high 23 points to lead nationally-ranked No. 23 Hampden-Sydney College to a 96-67 non-conference home win past Pfeiffer (NC) University on Friday night in the first round of the Hampden-Sydney Tip-Off Tournament sponsored by Elder, Watkins, Friedman & Allen, P.C. in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium at Kirby Field House. Junior forward and team captain Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) added 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists for the host Tigers, who led 39-29 at halftime and outscored the visitors 57-38 in the second half to improve to 4-0 on the season. Daymon Beckwith scored 13 points for the Falcons, who dropped to 2-2 on the season.

"Better defensive effort tonight overall," said sixth-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "This group just keeps improving. Loved seeing the younger guys get in and play with confidence as well. Another good test tomorrow, should be fun."

H-SC scored the first six points of the contest with Fernald tallying four quick points on a pair of offensive rebound baskets, and a layup from Brazil made it 6-0 just 1:29 in, and the Tigers led 10-5 at 14:51 after consecutive jumpers by junior transfer guard Hamilton Campbell (Wytheville). PU close to within 12-10 at 12:28, but the Garnet & Grey scored 10 unanswered points to lead 22-10 with 9:19 on the clock, getting four points from Brazil and three points each from Fernald and senior guard Nick Shryock (Davidson, NC). H-SC took its largest lead of the opening half at 37-24 at 2:18 following a layup by freshman guard Travis Stickney (Mount Pleasant, SC), and a Fernald layup assisted by Brazil in the final seconds provided for the 39-29 halftime score. Fernald had a huge half with 15 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Brazil added 13 first-half points.

H-SC began the second half on a quick 12-6 run to lead 51-35 at 16:23 as Brazil scored six points, Stickney added four points and Fernald scored down low again. PU was within 53-41 after a three-point field goal by Beckwith with 15:28 on the clock, but that was as close as it would get … the Tigers once-again scoring 10 unanswered points to lead 63-41 at 12:11, getting five points from junior transfer guard and team captain Colin Radcliffe (Richlands, NC), four points from Campbell and a free throw by sophomore center Alex Cannon (Loganville, GA). A slam dunk by Cannon, a three-pointer by senior guard Ayman McGowan (Memphis, TN) and four-straight free throws by Brazil made it 72-48 with 9:43 remaining, as Coach Kimbrough was able to play his reserves over the final nine-plus minutes. The Garnet & Grey took their largest lead of the contest at 94-63 with 1:13 left courtesy of a basket inside by freshman forward John Campbell (High Point, NC), assisted by junior guard Davis Cauble (Richmond), who had made a steal—Cauble added six late points, as well, toward the final 29-point margin of victory.
