BOX SCORE

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. --
All-American fifth-year guard and third-year team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) scored a game-high 30 points, including 22 in the second half, but nationally-ranked No. 23 Hampden-Sydney College dropped a hard-fought 81-78 non-conference decision at home to Gettysburg (PA) College in the championship game of the Hampden-Sydney Tip-Off Tournament sponsored by Elder, Watkins, Friedman & Allen, P.C. on Saturday afternoon in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium at Kirby Field House. Junior transfer guard and team captain Colin Radcliffe (Richlands, NC) added 13 points off the bench for the host Tigers, who trailed 34-31 at halftime in the closely-played contest that was tied at 71-71 with 2:13 remaining. Carl Schaller scored 24 points for the Bullets, and Nate Williams added 19 points, as the visitors used a late 7-1 run to take control and secure their road victory. H-SC dropped to 4-1, while unbeaten GC improved to 7-0.

"Congrats to Gettysburg, I thought they played well and hit some big shots tonight," said sixth-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "We are learning a lot about our team in this phase of the season. We have a really talented group that is just scratching the surface of what they can do this year. Tests like this certainly prepare us for league play."

H-SC took an early 4-0 advantage after a layup and two free throws by freshman guard Travis Stickney (Mount Pleasant, SC) 2:46 into the contest, but GC answered back with five-straight points to lead 5-4 at 13:48. The Tigers responded with three-point field goals off the bench from Radcliffe and junior transfer guard Hamilton Campbell (Wytheville) to lead 10-5 with 12:55 on the clock. The Bullets led 15-12 at 10:47 after a jumper by Schaller, but the Garnet & Grey were back in front 20-15 after a jumper by Brazil at 7:59. GC answered back to take a 31-24 advantage with 2:56 left in the half, but the home team rallied back to tie it at 31-31 on another three-pointer by Radcliffe at 00:38, only to have Schaller connect on a three-pointer of his own for a 34-31 lead at halftime.

GC outscored H-SC 10-9 to begin the second half for a 44-40 lead at 15:16, and the Bullets led 51-46 with 10:28 remaining after a layup by Jordan Stafford, extending the margin to 61-54 at 6:47 after a layup by Schaller. The Tigers battled back with a 12-5 run to tie the contest at 66-66 with 4:10 left to play—getting eight points from Brazil, including a pair of deep three-pointers, along with four points from junior forward and team captain Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC). The contest was tied at 69-69 (2:54) and 71-71 (2:13), both occasions on baskets by Brazil, but GC took control with a late 7-1 run to lead 78-72 with only 17-seconds on the clock, getting four quick points from Schaller to start it. The Garnet & Grey, however, made it interesting as Brazil completed an old-fashioned three-point play with 11-seconds left and nailed a three-pointer a step or two across midcourt with six-seconds left to close to within 79-78. Schaller made two free throws with two-seconds left, but Brazil's desperation three-point attempt from beyond midcourt was off the mark at the buzzer.

Brazil led No. 23 H-SC with his game-high 30 points, including 22 in the second half, adding six rebounds, four assists and a game-high two steals. Radcliffe finished with his 13 points for the Tigers, including 3-4 three-pointers. Senior guard Ayman McGowan (Memphis, TN) contributed a season-high 12 points, adding six rebounds, while Fernald had 10 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Senior guard Nick Shryock (Davidson, NC) also had nine rebounds, a career-high. H-SC shot 41% (28-68) from the field, including 28% (8-29) on three-pointers, and 74% (14-19) at the free throw line. The Tigers owned a 30-16 advantage in points scored in the paint.

Schaller led (RV)GC with his 24 points, adding four rebounds and two assists. Williams finished with his 19 points off for the Falcons. Stafford had nine points, along with game highs of 11 rebounds and five assists. GC shot 43% (26-60) from the field, including 36% (11-31) on three-pointers, and 75% (18-24) at the line.

Brazil was named to the Hampden-Sydney Tip-Off Tournament sponsored by Elder, Watkins, Friedman & Allen, P.C. All-Tournament Team, along with Schaller and Stafford of GC—Stafford earning Most Outstanding Player honors—while Reed Kemp of No. 20 Maryville (TN) and Daymon Beckwith of Pfeiffer (NC) were each named to the All-Tournament Team, as well.

H-SC will be idle next week for the Thanksgiving Holiday before opening Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action against visiting Roanoke College on Wednesday night, December 4, at 7 p.m. in Fleet Gym.
