Hampden-Sydney Uses Late Goal To Win 2-1 Over Roanoke In ODAC Quarterfinals

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Junior Pierce Boerner (Midlothian) scored a goal with 33 seconds left in regulation to lift Hampden-Sydney College to a 2-1 victory over Roanoke College in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Men's Soccer Quarterfinals, Saturday afternoon at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.

H-SC got the scoring started less than five minutes into the game, as junior Victor Ovalle-Mares (Atlanta, GA) beat his defender on the edge of the box and passed the ball into the center of the box which fellow classmate Walker Stebbings (Forest) passed into the bottom left corner. H-SC stood strong on defense, keeping the Maroons off the scoreboard to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The H-SC lead made it just 11 minutes into halftime, as Roanoke found the equalizer off a free kick to even the game at one. With overtime on everyone's mind and less than a minute to go in regulation, sophomore Mo Wumpini (Chattanooga, TN) was able to dodge the tackle of a Roanoke defender and run into a lot of space on the right edge of the box, taking a quick look up to find the run of Boerner and deliver a perfect pass into the box for Boerner to tap in with his left foot with 33 seconds remaining. The goal was all the Tigers needed, holding on for the final seconds to take a 2-1 win and advance to the ODAC Semifinals.

The Maroons had the edge offensively, taking 11 shots to four for the Tigers, but both sides were even on shots on target with three.

Senior goalie Wills Huddleston (Baldwin, MD) got the win in net, making two saves.

The Tigers will be back in action when they travel to take on the University of Lynchburg on Wednesday, November 6 in the ODAC Semifinals. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Shellenberger Field.
