H-SC Rugby Ends Season At CCRC Tournament

Tigers fall in competitive matches to Washington and Lee and Christendom

Culpeper, VA The Hampden-Sydney Rugby Football Club's season came to a close on Sunday with play against two strong opponents in the Cardinal Collegiate Rugby Conference (CCRC) tournament. On Saturday the Ruggers fell to Washington and Lee 29-28 in their opening match. The Tigers jumped out to a 14-0 lead with scores by Sophomore Austin Apesa and Senior Jonathan Person and two conversions by Senior Graeme Ebert. W&L battled back and took the lead in the second half. H-SC mounted a late charge with scores by Freshman Tristan Leidig and Austin Apesa with two more conversions by Graeme Ebert. W&L converted two penalty kicks to set the final score. On Sunday the Tigers faced #18 Christendom. H-SC led 7-0 early after a Senior Eli Strickland try and Graeme Ebert conversion. The Crusaders responded with three scores in the first half to take the lead. In the second half Eli Strickland and Freshman Ian Kuehl scored tries and Graeme Ebert added another conversion but it was not enough as Christendom won the match 48-19. In the final on Sunday Christendom defeated Virginia Military Institute 25-20 to win the CCRC Championship. This concludes the 15's season for Hampden-Sydney and the Tigers will return in January for the spring 7's season.
