Hampden-Sydney, Virginia A great Family Weekend crowd welcomed University of Virginia rugby to a match on Johnny Ellis Field on a beautiful and warm Saturday afternoon. The Hampden-Sydney Rugby Club and UVA played to a 36-36 tie in a high-level back-and -forth match that was finally settled in the last moments. The Cavaliers scored two tries early before the Tigers countered with
Joe Newcomer and
Carson Mann tries and two conversions by
Tristan Leidig. A UVA penalty kick just before intermission set the halftime score at 15-14 UVA. In the second half, tries by
Bruton Peacock, Austin Apsea and two tries and conversions by the Cavaliers gave UVA the lead 29-24 midway through the second half. A
Carson Mann try and another try and conversion kick by UVA moved the score to 36-29 in favor of the Cavaliers late in the second half. The Tigers would rally once again, with an
Elias Turney try and a
Thomas Nichols conversion setting the final score at 36-36. H-SC will next travel to UVA for a rematch in Charlottesville at 3:45 pm on Saturday, October 19th.
