Hampden-Sydney Uses Strong First Half To Secure A 3-0 Win Over Averett

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Junior Walker Stebbings (Forest) scored two goals to help Hampden-Sydney College secure a 3-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Averett University, Saturday night at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.

It took just over five minutes for the Tigers to grab a lead in the first half, as junior Victor Ovalle-Mares (Atlanta, GA) passed around the defense to find the run of Stebbings for the right-footed finish. Just under nine minutes later, Stebbings was fouled in the box and H-SC was given a penalty. Junior Charlie Letson (Wilmington, NC) stepped up and passed it down the middle as the goalie dived left to double the lead. One minute and four seconds later, the lead was at 3-0, as Stebbings ran onto a long ball from sophomore Kaden Sawyer (Virginia Beach) and beat the goalie twice before slotting it home with his left foot for his second goal of the game.

The second half was much different than the first, as even though both sides took more shots than the first half but neither could find the back of the net after a three goal first half. The goalies on both sides were up to the task, saving four shots each way. With the defenses holding strong for the final 45 minutes, that allowed H-SC to hold onto its 3-0 lead and secure the victory.

It was the Cougars who took more shots on the night with 13 compared to 12 but the Tigers found the net far more often, putting nine shots on target compared to five for Averett.

Senior goalie Wills Huddleston (Baldwin, MD) grabbed the win and the shutout while making five saves on the night.

The Tigers will close the regular season with senior night on Wednesday, October 30, when they play host to Virginia Wesleyan University in an ODAC clash. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
