Hampden-Sydney Hosting Averett On Saturday At 1 p.m. During Homecoming Weekend On The Hill

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College welcomes Averett University in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football action on Saturday afternoon, October 26, at 1 p.m. on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. The host Tigers are 3-3 overall, 1-2 in the ODAC, while the visiting Cougars are 2-4 overall, 0-3 in the ODAC. It's Homecoming Weekend on the Hill. The game can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM, and will also be available worldwide on the Internet at wvhl.net or via the TuneIn Radio App, while available to watch as well on the Tiger Sports Network live video stream at hscathletics.com, pregame airing at 12:30 p.m.

H-SC fell on the road at ODAC opponent Ferrum 41-36 on Oct. 19. The visiting Tigers led the host Panthers 7-0 after one quarter, and 14-0 in the second quarter en route to a 17-13 lead at halftime, extending the advantage to 23-13 early in the third quarter, before falling behind 27-23 after three quarters and trailing 41-23 midway through the fourth quarter. A pair of late touchdowns provided for the final margin. AU fell at home to No. 23 Randolph-Macon 49-10, trailing 35-3 at halftime and 49-3 after three quarters toward the setback.

Head Coach Vince Luvara
H-SC is led by the first-year head coach who took over the program on December 7, 2023. The former defensive coordinator at Washington & Jefferson (PA) College since 2016, Luvara becomes the 29th head coach in the 130-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native is no stranger to NCAA Division III, having played four years at Allegheny (PA) College and coached one year at Allegheny and two years at Misericordia (PA) University—each school members of Division III.

The Series
H-SC leads the overall series against AU, 7-3, including a 31-28 road win last Oct. 14, 2023 in Danville. The Tigers and Cougars first met on the gridiron in 2010, resulting in a 45-30 road win for H-SC. The Tigers are 4-1 at home against AU, including a 37-26 win on Oct. 15, 2022 at Everett Stadium in the most recent game on the Hill.

Scouting The Tigers
Junior quarterback and team captain Carter Sido (Dallas, TX) has passed for 1,290 yards (96-167-4) and 17 touchdowns with four interceptions thrown, adding 169 yards rushing and one touchdown. He leads the ODAC in passing touchdowns (20th nationally), is third in passing yards, passing efficiency (151.2) and total offense per game (243.2), and sixth in completion percentage (57.5). Sido ranks 29th nationally in points responsible for per game (18.7) and 32nd nationally in overall points responsible for (112).

Sophomore running back Terry Hicks (Clayton, NC) has rushed for 418 yards on 83 attempts (5.0) and six touchdowns in five games (83.6), adding five receptions for 31 yards. He is tied for third in the ODAC in rushing touchdowns, fourth in rushing yards, 10th in all-purpose yards per game (89.8) and 11th in total offense per game (83.6).

Sophomore wide receiver Ethan Dowdy (Powhatan) has 37 receptions for 519 yards and nine touchdowns. He leads the ODAC in receiving yards, receiving touchdowns (12th nationally) and total touchdowns (31st nationally), is second in receptions and receptions per game (6.2, 44th nationally) and is seventh in all-purpose yards per game (97.2). Dowdy ranks 35th nationally in total points (54) and 37th nationally in scoring per game (9.0). Redshirt-freshman wide receiver Manning Lasso (Raleigh, NC) has 26 receptions for 281 yards and three touchdowns. Manning is tied for fourth in the ODAC in receiving touchdowns, and fifth in receptions, receiving yards and receptions per game (4.0). Senior tight end Sutton Lasso (Raleigh, NC) has 18 receptions for 252 yards and three touchdowns. Sutton is tied for fourth in the ODAC in receiving touchdowns, is eighth in receiving yards, tied for eighth in receptions and 11th in receptions per game (3.0). Senior wide receiver Austin Fernandez (Warrenton) has seven receptions for 160 yards and three touchdowns. He is tied for fourth in the ODAC in receiving touchdowns and is 19th in receiving yards.

Junior linebacker and team captain Robert Clarke (Atlanta, GA) has 52 tackles, including 4.5 for loss, 1.0 sacks, one pass breakup and two fumble recoveries. He is tied for first in the ODAC in fumble recoveries, tied for fourth in total tackles and tied for ninth in tackles for loss. Senior linebacker and team captain Brendan Wallace (Virginia Beach) has 48 tackles, including 8.5 for loss, 5.0 sacks, one fumble recovery and one QB hurry. He leads the ODAC in sacks (43rd nationally), is tied for first in tackles for loss, tied for fourth in fumble recoveries and is seventh in total tackles. Senior free safety Joseph Pierre (Mobile, AL) has 31 tackles, including 0.5 for loss. He is tied for 19th in the ODAC in total tackles. Freshman cornerback Parks Cromwell (Charlotte, NC) also has 31 tackles, including 1.0 for loss, two interceptions, five pass breakups and one forced fumble. He is tied for third in the ODAC in interceptions and forced fumbles, and tied for 19th in total tackles, as well. Junior cornerback James Townsend (Hardeeville, SC) has 30 tackles, including 2.5 for loss, two interceptions and two pass breakups. He is also tied for third in the ODAC in interceptions. Junior nose tackle Andrew Arthur-Humphrey (Woodbridge) also has 30 tackles, including 1.5 for loss.

Senior placekicker Elijah Swett (Matthews, NC) is 22-23 on PAT kicks (95.7) and 5-6 on field goal attempts (83.3), including a long of 37 yards (twice). He has averaged 58.2 yards on 36 kickoffs (seven-yard line) with four touchbacks. He is second in the ODAC in field goal percentage (83.3, 13th nationally), tied for second in kick scoring points (37) and field goal per game (.83, 44th nationally). Sophomore punter Camden Richardson (Midlothian) has averaged 35.1 yards on 15 punts, including a long of 55 yards, with one fair-caught and three downed inside the 20 in five games. Junior running back Joseph Gonzalez (Spotsylvania) has averaged 22.7 yards on 18 kick returns, including a long of 61 yards. He is eighth in the ODAC in kick return average, and ranks 28th nationally in combined kick return yards (409).

Scouting The Cougars
Junior quarterback Louis De lulio has passed for 132 yards (15-41-2) with two interceptions thrown in four games. Freshman quarterback Brock Hoffman has passed for 112 yards (15-29-1) with one interception thrown in five games. Sophomore quarterback Ethan Ross, injured in the third game of the season, has passed for 585 yards (38-65-3) and four touchdowns with three interceptions thrown, adding 104 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Junior running back Gaby Soto has rushed for 411 yards on 90 attempts (4.6) and three touchdowns, adding five receptions for 38 yards. Senior wide receiver Shawn Watlington has 13 receptions for 265 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore wide receiver Trevor Testerman has 18 receptions for 190 yards and two touchdowns. Graduate linebacker Tre' Maxwell has 52 total tackles, including 4.5 for loss, two pass breakups and one forced fumble. Junior linebacker Anthony Brunelli has 50 total tackles, including 1.5 for loss, 1.0 sacks and one forced fumble. Fifth-year free safety Seth Harden has 32 total tackles, including 1.5 for loss, one pass breakup and one forced fumble. Freshman placekicker/punter Mikhail Iakovlev is 9-12 on PAT kicks and 2-3 on field goal attempts, including a long of 42 yards. He has averaged 58.0 yards on 21 kickoffs with one touchback, and has averaged 39.1 yards on 33 punts, including a long of 55 yards, with eight fair-caught and nine downed inside the 20.

has two career games with 100-plus yards rushing, each this season — a career-high and game-high 130 yards on a career-high 24 attempts and a career-high two touchdowns at Brevard (NC) (9/14), and a game-high 107 yards on 19 attempts and one touchdown in his first collegiate start vs. Delaware Valley (PA) (9/7).

Team Captains
Leading the Tigers are senior center Logan Cohn (Henrico) and senior linebacker Brendan Wallace, along with junior linebacker Robert Clarke, junior quarterback Carter Sido and junior right tackle William Stimmel (Atlanta, GA). All five are serving in the leadership roles for the first time. Logan is the son of Stefan and Heather Cohn. Brendan is the son of Jason and Kristiana Wallace. Robert is the son of Tom and Jill Clarke. Carter is the son of Chris Sido and Tova Sido. William is the son Carl and Claudia Stimmel.

William V. Campbell Trophy®
Senior defensive end Will Thomas (Blacksburg) is the program's fifth-straight semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy®, college football's premier scholar-athlete award. Will is among a record number of 203 semifinalists from all divisions, while the only one from the ODAC and among the 44 selected from Division III. He follows in the footsteps of Tyler Howerton '21, Kaleb Smith '22, Michael Harris '23 and George Langhammer '24—Howerton went on to become one of 12 finalists for the prestigious annual award in 2020. Will is a Dean's List student majoring in English with a minor in Spanish and has attained a 3.40 GPA. He is the son of Eric Thomas and Anna LoMascolo.

Hampden-Sydney Football
H-SC has a 129 year history of football, amassing 581 wins since beginning in 1892. The Tigers have experienced great success over the years, including nine ODAC Championships, nine Mason-Dixon Conference Championships, seven NCAA Division III Championship appearances, 87 All-Americans, 16 Academic All-America selections and 222 First Team All-ODAC honorees. H-SC also played in the 1970 and 1971 Knute Rockne Bowls (NCAA College Division East Regional Championship).

From Division III To FBS Memphis
Ryan Silverfield '03 became the 25th head coach in the University of Memphis football history in December 2019 and began his tenure by leading the Tigers into their first major bowl game appearance: the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic in Dallas. He is currently 37-19 overall in his fifth season at the helm of the Tigers, including 6-1 in 2024. Silverfield led Memphis to a record of 10-3 in 2023, following a 7-6 season in 2022, after going 8-3 season in 2020, and the Tigers were 6-6 in 2021. Ryan coached four seasons as an undergraduate at H-SC, starting as an offensive assistant in 2000, serving as the defensive line coach during 2001 and 2002, before coaching the tight ends and H-backs in 2003.
