HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Junior
Jaques Lavielle (Cary, NC) scored one goal and added two assists to help Hampden-Sydney College take its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Shenandoah University by a score of 4-1, Wednesday night at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
The Tigers wasted no time getting on the board to start the game, as just over five minutes in Lavielle crossed the ball into the box from near the corner flag and found the head of junior
Walker Stebbings (Forest) who put the ball off both posts and into the back of the net. Eight minutes later, the score was 2-0 in favor of the Tigers, as sophomore
Tyler Petz (Cary, NC) sent in a corner in that was punched out by the goalie, but then bounced around in the box, eventually falling to Lavielle who put it home. The defense held strong for H-SC the rest of the half to take the 2-0 lead into the break.
The second half started just like the first, but it was the Hornets who grabbed a quick goal just over four minutes after the whistle was blown. The Tigers answered in the 75th minute, as Lavielle played a ball into the feet of sophomore
Mo Wumpini (Chattanooga, TN) who then turned and beat a defender before rifling a right-footed shot into the corner. Just three minutes and one second later, it was 4-1, as Petz crossed a ball into the middle of the box finding the run of junior
Charlie Letson (Wilmington, NC) for the easy tap-in goal. Both sides clamped down from there, as neither side could muster another goal as H-SC took a 4-1 win.
Both sides were very even offensively with the Hornets having a slight edge in shots at 13 to 12 but the Tigers found the target more often, testing the goalie 10 times to the Hornets four.
Sophomore
Daniel Beb (Woodbridge) got the start and made one save over 57:03 minutes of action. Senior
Wills Huddleston (Baldwin, MD) came in and made two saves over the final 32:57 to help secure the win.
The Tigers will be back in action when they play host to Roanoke College on Saturday, October 5, on what will be Family Day at the college. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
