No. 1 Hampden-Sydney Plays At Randolph On Wednesday At 5 p.m.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College, ranked No. 1 in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25, plays on the road at Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opponent Randolph College on Wednesday evening, January 17, at 5 p.m. in Lynchburg. NCAA Division III's top-ranked Tigers are 14-1 overall, including 6-1 in the ODAC, following a 102-61 ODAC home win past Eastern Mennonite University on Jan. 13 in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium at Kirby Field House~their ninth-straight victory. The WildCats are 7-9 overall, 1-6 in the ODAC, after a 79-53 ODAC road loss at Roanoke College on Jan. 13 in Salem~their fourth consecutive loss. The contest will be available to watch via Wildcats All-Access.

Head Coach Caleb Kimbrough
H-SC is led by the fifth-year head coach who took over the program on April 4, 2019. The former head coach at Huntingdon (AL) College from 2016-19, Kimbrough is the 19th head coach in the 114-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. He is no stranger to the ODAC, having played four years at Guilford (NC) College and coached six years with the Quakers, and one year at Washington and Lee. Kimbrough is 66-36 overall at the College, including 37-22 in ODAC games. Caleb was both the 2022-23 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division III District 6 Coach of the Year, and the ODAC Men's Basketball Bob Johnson Coach of the Year.

Scouting No. 1 Hampden-Sydney
H-SC is enjoying its finest start to a season since 2003-04 when the Tigers also began 14-1 en route to a 25-5 campaign that included an ODAC Tournament Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. This year's team is extremely balanced offensively with three players averaging in double-figure scoring among its five starters that are each scoring at least 5.7 points per game, while seven Tigers are playing at least 15-plus minutes among 10 playing seven-plus minutes per game. H-SC has been led by senior forward Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) with his 15.9 points (26 3FGs) and 8.1 rebounds, senior guard and team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) with his 12.4 points (30 3FGs) and 4.1 assists, along with fifth-year guard Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA) with his 11.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists. Joining them in the lineup have been senior guard Alex Elliott (Marietta, GA) (7.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, 15 3FGs) and senior guard/forward and team captain Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) (5.7 points, 4.1 rebounds). Junior guard Ayman McGowan (Memphis, TN) (4.7 points, 17 3FGs), fifth-year guard Chase Turner (Virginia Beach) (4.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.4 assists), fifth-year forward and team captain Miles Harris (Virginia Beach) (3.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, 14 3FGs) and sophomore forward Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) (3.3 points) have provided solid depth. The Tigers are shooting 46% (426-932) from the field, including 38% (128-336) on three-point field goals (8.5 per game), and 74% (146-198) at the free throw line. H-SC has averaged 75.1 points, and allowed only 59.7 points, for a +15.4 scoring margin.

Scouting Randolph
The WildCats are coached by seventh-year head coach Pete Hamilton. Randolph has been led by graduate guard Danny Bickey with his 17.6 points (46 3FGs) and 1.2 steals. The WildCats shoot 40% (383-950) from the field, including 34% (121-357) on three-pointers (7.6 per game), and 74% (189-257) at the line; scoring 67.3 points, and yielding 70.6 points, for a -3.4 scoring margin.

ODAC Series History
H-SC leads the all-time series between the two schools, 11-7. The Tigers have won three-straight and four of five in the series, including 86-67 last season on Jan. 18, 2023 in Lynchburg. Randolph won the first-ever contest between the two schools, 57-49, on Jan. 28, 2009 in Lynchburg, as current WildCat head coach Pete Hamilton scored a game-high 20 points, including 5-8 three-pointers, for Randolph's first-ever ODAC men's basketball win.

H-SC  remains ranked No. 1 nationally in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25. It's the third consecutive week that the Tigers have been ranked first in the national poll for NCAA Division III men's basketball. The Garnet & Grey earned 623 points in this week's poll, including 23 of 25 first-place votes.

Bevo Francis Award Top 100 Watch List
Davidson Hubbard was named to the 2023-24 Bevo Francis Award Top 100 Watch List. The Clarence "Bevo" Francis Award is presented annually to the player who has had the finest overall season within Small College Basketball to include NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA, USCAA and NCCAA.

The Team Three-Point Stat
H-SC has made at least one three-point field goal in 475 consecutive games, dating back to a home game vs. Emory & Henry on Dec. 3, 2005 (0-1). Ironically, the Tigers won that contest 130-99. H-SC's 128 three-pointers this season includes three games of at least 11, with a season-high 17 three-pointers vs. Rose-Hulman (IN) on Nov. 18 (17-36). The season-low is four at Ferrum on Jan. 3 (4-22).

Career Watch
Ryan Clements ranks 16th in career scoring with 1,278 career points in 102 career games (12.5). Russell Turner '92 is the all-time leader with 2,272 career points. Clements is ninth in career steals with 169 career steals (1.7). Ralph Baker '89 is the all-time leader with 258 career steals. Davidson Hubbard is 10th in career blocks with 48 career blocks in 73 career games (0.7). Mike Thompson '04 is the all-time leader with 136 career blocks.

2023-24 Team Captains
Leading the Tigers are fifth-year Miles Harris, along with seniors Adam Brazil and Josiah Hardy. Harris and Brazil are each serving in the leadership role for their second season, while Hardy is a first-year captain. Miles is the son of Randy Harris and Corey Bacs and is majoring in economics and business. Adam is the son of Mark and Kristen Brazil and is majoring in English. Josiah is the son of Vernal Hardy and Felicia Miller and is majoring in economics and business.
 
Three Former Tigers Are Division I Head Coaches
H-SC currently has three former basketball team members and graduates of the College that are serving as NCAA Division I head coaches. Russell Turner '92 is in his 14th year at UC Irvine ... Ryan Odom '96 is in his first season at VCU and his eighth season as a DI head coach (UMBC, Utah State) ... Griff Aldrich '96 is in his sixth year at Longwood. Entering this season, Turner was 265-170 at UCI ... Odom was 141-85 overall, including 44-25 in two years at USU and 97-60 in five years at UMBC ... Aldrich was 88-72 at Longwood.

Up Next
H-SC will play on the road at Shenandoah University on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. in Winchester. The Tigers then return home for four-straight in Fleet Gym, beginning with the University of Lynchburg on Wednesday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m.
