HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College used three different scorers to take a 3-0 victory over visiting Franciscan (OH) University, Saturday morning at Hellmuth-Gibson Field. Freshman
Mo Wumpini (Chattanooga, TN) tallied two assists, and fellow classmate
Tyler Petz (Cary, NC) scored his first career goal. Sophomore
Pierce Boerner (Midlothian) scored a goal and added an assist, with fifth-year
Michael Ogenyi (Virginia Beach) finding the back of the net as well.
The offense for the Tigers was firing early in the morning, taking 26 shots during the game, with 10 of those finding the target.
Petz got the scoring started at the 13-minute mark of the game, as Wumpini ran onto a ball that snuck through two sliding Barons and made a pass across the box to find Petz, who took one dribble to his left and found the top right corner with a left-footed strike. The Tigers had a good chance to double the lead at the 25-minute mark, but a save on a penalty by the keeper kept the game 1-0 going into halftime.
It took less than 10 minutes after the second-half kick-off for the Tigers to strike again. Senior
Declan Shaw (Durham, NC) got the counter-attack started with a perfect slide tackle that pushed the ball into the path of Wumpini. Wumpini then took a few dribbles before playing a ball to his left to find the run of Boerner who took the shot first time with his right foot to beat the keeper. H-SC made it two in just over six minutes, as Boerner took the ball away on the left wing and started the break. As he reached the box, Boerner took a shot with his right foot that the goalie parried away, but into the path of a hustling Ogenyi for the tap-in goal.
H-SC will be back in action on Wednesday, September 6, when it travels to Arlington, Virginia to take on Marymount University. Kick-off is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Long Bridge Park.
