Greensboro, NC -- Senior
Ben Beason (Cary, NC) helped Hampden-Sydney College take a 1-0 season-opening victory over Greensboro (NC) College, by slotting home a penalty in the first half, at Pride Field in Greensboro, North Carolina.
With just 11:57 having run off the clock, freshman
Mo Wumpini (Chattanooga, TN) got the ball in the box and tried to get around the defender, who stuck a leg out and tripped him in the box, causing the referee to give a penalty. Beason stepped up for the Tigers and calmly passed it into the bottom right corner, sending the goalkeeper the other way in the process.
From then on, the game was fully in control for the Tigers, outshooting the Pride eight to one in the first half and 11 to three in the second. H-SC also had an edge in corner kicks, having five more set-piece opportunities than its opponent.
Junior
Wills Huddleston (Baldwin) was rarely called into action in the winning effort, making only one save as the defense stood strong only allowing four total shots.
The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, September 2, when they play host to Franciscan (OH) University. Kickoff for the game will be at 10 a.m. at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
