No. 17 Hampden-Sydney Stays Unbeaten In ODAC Action With 23-2 Win Over Randolph

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Seniors Talmadge Hope (Richmond) and Marshall Flagg (Williamsburg) along with junior Ray O'Brien (Scituate, MA) scored three goals to lead No. 17 Hampden-Sydney College to a 23-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Randolph College, Wednesday night at WildCat Stadium in Lynchburg. Senior Kevin Marshall (Mt. Pleasant, SC) scored two goals, senior Nick Scheer (Lakeville, MN) scored two goals and added an assist, and junior Luke Helfgott (Arlington) scored two goals and tallied two assists. Junior Michael Leone (Vienna) and Luke Helfgott (Arlington) tallied two assists to go along with one goal.

The Tigers opened the scoring at the 9:32 mark of the first quarter, as Leone found Hope in front of the net for the quick finish. Hope made it two straight for him and the Tigers as he rifled a shot from the left side past the goalie into the netting at the far post. Leone got the game's third goal for H-SC as he fired a shot past the goalie from the left side after getting the feed on the fast break from junior Matt Gemmell (Winston-Salem, NC). Marshall made it four unanswered, as he got the ball moving to his right and shot over the defense for the goal. O'Brien added to the lead, after making a spin move between two defenders he shot while falling over and beat the goalie. Senior Jack Limon (Gainesville, FL) quickly made it six unanswered as he picked up a ground ball after the shot from Hope was saved and put it into the empty net. O'Brien got his second of the game just three seconds after a clean win by freshman Connor Erlenbach (Midlothian), he found Leone who quickly got it over to O'Brien on the opposite side of the net for the goal to give H-SC a 7-0 lead.

The WildCats opened the scoring in the second half before the Tigers got out in transition and Leone found O'Brien wide open in front of the net for the finish. Leone got his first goal of the night, as he found himself open on the side of the net, and senior Nick Thompson (Midlothian) found him for the finish. Hope netted his hat trick 20 seconds later, getting the feed from O'Brien behind the net and wrapping around the net to score. Scheer got his first of the night less than a minute later, taking the pass from sophomore Campion White (Apex, NC) and then beating his man to the right for the goal. Marshall found an easy goal less than 40 seconds later, picking up a loose ball right in front of an empty net and shoveling it in. Hanes got his first of the night to stretch the lead to 13-1, as he hesitated before making a move left and firing a left-handed shot passed the goalie.

Flagg opened the scoring in the third quarter, as he cut pasted three defenders to beat the goalie with a well-placed shot. Helfgott helped add to the lead as he found freshman Davis Mack (Henrico) wide open in front of the net and set him up for the easy finish. Scheer added his second of the night as he found himself wide open on the right side of the net, and from the middle of the field, Flagg found him for the finish. The combo reversed just over a minute later, as Scheer found Flagg on the right side for the screamer past the goalie. Off the ensuing face-off, H-SC grabbed control and the ball quickly got into the hands of senior Max Koontz (Winston-Salem, NC), who made a quick pass to Helfgott for the finish. Sophomore Stuart Kyle (Leesburg) got his first goal of the game to make it 19-1, as Helgott had the ball behind the net and found Kyle up top with a lot of space to wind up and rip a shot into the back of the net. Helfgott got his first goal of the game with 3:04 left in the quarter, as he reacted quickly to a rebound off the shot from junior Jacob Renaud (Schenectady, NY) to pick it up and flick it behind his head for the goal. Flagg got his hat trick goal after receiving the ball up top and making a quick pass fake to keep his defender on his hip and make space for the shot to close out the third quarter with H-SC up 21-1.

Junior Jack Hall (Norfolk) scored his first career goal to kick off the fourth quarter, taking the ball in transition from midfield straight to the goal to finish in the top of the net. Junior Hunter Eppleman (Virginia Beach) scored 12 seconds later, as off the face-off the Tigers raced down and after a pass to Koontz, he made a quick pass to his left to find the stick of Eppleman just outside the crease and he did the rest for the goal. Randolph clawed one back with 2:10 left in the quarter, but that ended the scoring in the game as H-SC took a 23-2 victory.

The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, April 22, when they travel to Salem to take on Roanoke College in ODAC action. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at Donald J. Kerr Stadium.
