13-Goal Second Quarter Powers Hampden-Sydney To A 24-12 Win Over Greensboro (NC)

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Senior Talmadge Hope (Richmond) led the game with five goals while junior Ray O'Brien (Scituate, MA) scored four goals and added two assists to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 24-12 victory over Greensboro (NC) College, Saturday afternoon at Pride Field in Greensboro, North Carolina. Junior Patrick Saunders (Alexandria) tallied two assists and scored three goals and fellow classmate Ford Burke (Richmond) scored three goals with one assist.

Junior Drew Duffy (Virginia Beach) got the scoring started in the first quarter, scoring an unassisted goal just under five minutes into the game. H-SC added two in just over a minutes time, both up a man, first from Hope off an assist from senior Nick Thompson (Midlothian), and 71 seconds later from Burke to put an end to the first quarter scoring and give H-SC a 3-0 lead after one.

Sophomore Campion White (Apex, NC) wasted no time getting the scoring started in the second quarter, beating the goalie 34 seconds after the face-off. Hope added a second man-up goal off a Saunders feed and Burke found the back of the net 27 seconds later off an O'Brien pass. O'Brien then found the net for the first time, 28 seconds after Burke and a man-up before sophomore Griff Ray (Lexington) scored to push the Hampden-Sydney run to eight. The Pride stopped the run eight seconds after the Ray goal, but the Tigers countered getting two goals in 14 seconds from Saunders off a White assist, and the fifth man-up goal of the game, and the hat trick goal for Hope. Greensboro scored three unanswered before the Tigers answered with four unanswered, getting two goals from O'Brien and a goal each from Burke and junior Michael Leone (Vienna). After another Pride goal, the Tigers closed out the second quarter with goals from Hope and Saunders to take a 16-5 lead into halftime, after scoring 13 goals in the second quarter.

The goals were a lot harder to come by in the third quarter than they were in the second. Greensboro started off the scoring before a two-goal run started by Ray and finished by freshman Patrick Hanes (Raleigh, NC) off a pass from senior Aidan Byrne (Charlotte, NC). The Pride answered with a two-goal run of their own, including a goal down a man, before a quick-fire double from Hope and Saunders for H-SC made it 20-8 after three quarters.

Both sides traded goals to start the fourth quarter, with Greensboro opening the scoring and Thompson answering less than a minute later. The pride answered the goal by rattling off three straight. H-SC answered the three-goal run with one of its own to finish the game getting the first from O'Brien, followed by fifth-year student Marshall Flagg (Williamsburg), and the final goal of the game coming from freshman Davis Mack (Richmond).

The Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday, March 7 at nationally ranked no. 15 Cabrini (PA) University for their first midweek game of the season. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Edith Robb Dixon Field in Radnor, Pennsylvania.
