HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va -- Sophomore
Campion White (Apex, NC) scored the game-winning goal in quadruple overtime as Hampden-Sydney College took down the nationally-ranked No. 10 Washington and Lee University, 11-10, Wednesday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. Junior
Ray O'Brien (Scituate, MA) scored three goals and freshman
Patrick Hanes (Raleigh, NC) led the Tigers scored two goals and added an assist. Senior
Talmadge Hope (Richmond) added two goals while fifth-year goalie
Will Perry (Roanoke) got the victory in net making 15 saves.
Hanes got the scoring started in the first quarter, finding the back of the net just 1:37 seconds after the opening faceoff. H-SC added a second as White found Hanes up top and after making a spin move to create some space, Hanes fired it past the goalie. O'Brien made it three unanswered in the first, as he fought off a challenge from the defender before spinning and firing at the net for the goal, as H-SC took a 3-0 lead into the first break.
The Tigers opened the second quarter much like they did the first, by finding the back of the net as junior
Patrick Saunders (Alexandria) drove left before finding White all alone on the right side who fired home the goal. The Generals got one back before senior
Nick Thompson (Midlothian) picked up a ground ball in the defensive half of the field, and took it coast-to-coast dodging two defenders on the way to beat the goalie. Washington and Lee answered with another goal to cut the lead to three before Thompson got a clean win on a face-off to lead the break and passed it off to junior
Michael Leone (Vienna) who then found Hope wide open on the left side of the net for the goal. The Generals answered once more in the second, scoring the next two goals to cut the H-SC lead to 6-4 after 30 minutes.
H-SC opened up the scoring in the third quarter, as Hope picked up a loose ball in front of the net on the man advantage and beat the goalie just 1:22 into the second half. Sophomore
Griff Ray (Salem) got in the scoresheet as Leone found him on a cut to the net for the easy finish. O'Brien capped off the scoring in the third period, taking the ball down the right side before juking his defender to get an open shot and he fired it in sidearm to make it 9-4 after three quarters.
The Generals stormed back in the fourth quarter, going on a four-goal run before
Ray O'Brien found himself wide open in the middle of the field after a great one handed catch by Leone who quickly found him for the finish. The Generals did not go down quietly, answering the O'Brien goal with two more of their own to even the game up at 10. The Tigers had possession at the end of the game but with the Generals committing a foul just before the final whistle, they decided to run out the clock and take the ball for overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime, the Tigers had one of the best chances early in the second overtime, after Hope had his shot saved, Ray picked up the loose ball right in front of the net, but was turned away by the goalie. It would not be until the fourth overtime that the game was decided, as Saunders had the ball up on the left side and as he started to drive to the net White's defender drifted to help leaving White wide open on the left side. Saunders made the pass to White and he wound up and fire a laser into the top of the net to win the game 11-10.
Ironically, the victory in the fourth overtime period came almost 20 years to the day (April 12, 2003) after the program's last and only other four-overtime victory—which was also over Washington and Lee, and which was also during Greek Week. Fittingly, the player who netted that game winner in 2003, Phil Dick '03, was in the stands with his family today to see the victory.
The Tigers will be back in action on Friday, March 31 when they play host to Averett University in ODAC play. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
